To Whom It May Concern:
Thank you for your recent inquiry pertaining to the payment of taxes and the tax exempts status of the
Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE).
OSMRE is a bureau within the Department of the Interior. Agencies of the Federal Government are not obligated to pay state or local taxes when they are imposed directly on the Federal Government.
Agencies are, however, not exempt from the payment of state or local taxes when incidence of tax is on the vendor (as prescribed by certain state laws).
The tax identification number for OSMRE is 84-0738961.
The tax-exempt number of OSMRE is 140001849.
Agencies of the Federal Government assert their immunity or exemption from taxes as prescribed by the
Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 29.3, November 6, 2017, through the use of evidence or exemption, such as purchase orders (OF347) and contracts (SF26).
