Paper is severely stained, brittle and folded. Black/gray spotted mold stains, red-orange rust stains and diffuse dark brown areas.

Rehouse once treated in a Mylar L-sleeve and an outer archival folder.

Housing Recommendations:

Paper is housed folded as creases are too tight to open the document in its present condition

Surface clean Mend tears Fill losses Remove accretions Humidify and flatten Remove from mount

Compensate for loss of media Remove attachments (staples, tapes) Consolidate media Bathe in deionzied water Reduce stains Reduce adhesive

Treatment Considerations:

Most of the stains will not be visibly improved even with bathing and spot bleaching.

Some areas will need to be reinforced from the back as the paper fibers are very weak or the entire document may need to be lined with a very thin Japanese paper.
