About this file
This is a Single Source Justification (Simplified Acquisition) document for the AFRAT Portable HPGe Gamma Spectrometer acquisition.
The Air Force is procuring an AEGIS Spectrometer with a 40% GX-Detector and RDC as a complete operational package, including all necessary batteries, cables, comprehensive warranties, software licensing, technical manuals, on-site installation, and operator training. The acquisition is restricted to the brand name AEGIS-GX40-RDC under Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 6.103-1(d) and 6.103-5(b)(2), as only this specific model is compatible with the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicines' existing equipment and essential to government requirements. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicines currently uses these platforms daily to produce results for all Department of War assets, and procuring an alternative would require costly training overhaul.
Market research was conducted through internet searches, vendor outreach, and consultation with Subject Matter Experts at the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicines. A Sources Sought notice was published on SAM.gov on June 18, 2026, with capability statement responses due July 7, 2026. Three capability statements were received, confirming that only the AEGIS-GX40-RDC model meets all requirements, though multiple distributors are available. The Contracting Officer has determined that single source procurement is reasonably available under FAR 13.106-1(b)(1). Future efforts to increase competition include continuous market research, thorough analysis of platform dependency, and ongoing industry engagement to identify alternative technologies and interoperable solutions.
