About this file
This file is an artwork inventory spreadsheet documenting 992 pieces of artwork held by the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF), including paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works. The spreadsheet contains detailed cataloging information for each artwork, including accession numbers, titles, dimensions in English and framed measurements, medium/support materials (oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, etc.), artist descriptions, locations within the museum, and storage locations on hanging racks or in flat files. The collection spans from 1950 to 2015 and includes portraits of Air Force leadership, combat scenes, aircraft depictions, historical commemorations, and documentation of Air Force personnel and operations. Notable artworks include official portraits of Air Force Chiefs of Staff, depictions of significant Air Force operations from World War II through Operation Iraqi Freedom, and specialized works documenting medical services, training facilities, space programs, and humanitarian missions. Each entry provides specific provenance information, damage notes where applicable, and thematic descriptions that connect the artwork to Air Force history and mission activities. This inventory directly supports the concurrent RFQ FA860126Q0071 for professional remediation and conservation assessment services, establishing the baseline dataset of 992 artwork pieces requiring mold remediation and condition assessments as specified in the Performance Work Statement for quoted services.

| 1955.014 | MAJ GENERAL C T MENOHER | 54" __36" | A Posthumous Portrait Pained By The Artist In 1955 From Photos Of The 20s. Born at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1862, he graduated from West Point in 1886 and was commisioned in the Artillery. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, December 1862 and graduated from the Artillery School in 1894. |
During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba and subsequently served three tours in the Philippines. He was promoted to Captain in February 1901.
During 1903-07, he was a member of the original General Staff of the Army, also graduating from the Army War College in the latter year and receiving promotion to Major in January, then returned to Cuba as Provost Marshal for the pacification forces stationed there. He was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel in May 1911. In June 1916 he was promoted to Colonel in command of the 5th Field Artillery.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in August 1917 and given command of the School of Instruction for Field Artillery of the American Expeditionary Force at Saumur, France, in September. In November he was promoted to Temporary Brigadier Generarl, and in December took command of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division, which participated in action in the Luneville and Baccarat Sectors, and in Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Operations.
Early in November 1918 he was promoted to the permanent rank of Brigadier General in recognition of his services in World War I. On November 10, the day before the Armistice, the 42nd reached the heights above Sedan, the most advanced position attained by U.S. troops, and on the same day, he was raised to command of the VI Corps. In December he was named Director of the Air Service, which in June 1920 was reorganized by the consolidation of the thehereto divided Supply and Operations functions of the fledgling air arm, separated from the Signal Corps, and made a part of the line of the army.
Largely because of friction with his assistant, Colonel William Mitchell, he was releived of the post at his own request in October 1921. He was promoted to Major General in March 1921 and in 1922-24 commanded the Hawaiian Division, and in 1925-26 the IX Corps Area at San Francisco.
He retired from the Army in March 1926 and died in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 1930. He was buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery.

| 1972.220 | JON BLACK RELEASED POW | 52"x30" | Major Jon Black was released by the North Vietnamese in 1968, four months after he was captured. He was shot down and captured by Viet Cong, interrogated and imprisoned. He believes his F-4 co-pilot was killed in the crash which he barely survived. His panel was cartwheeling and burning when he jettisoned. He was nearly killed again when he parachuted into the jungle--canopy, dropped and slid down some bamboo. He hid in some tree roots but was discovered and stripped of everything but his flying suit by peasant militia. His release came as a complete surprise. He believes it may have been because of his relatively good condition. He was picked up by father Daniel Berrigan and professor. I made this painting to point up a positive note in the tragic prisoner of war story. Jon Black at the time of this painting (1972) was one of 9 released prisoners, while hundreds remain behind as this long and horrible war drags on and on destroying the morality of our nation and the people of theirs. Major Black is now serving as an administrator of the Inter American in the Canal Zone at Albrook Air Field. | 1:5B | __AMO __Art Program | Acrylic | ||

| 1979.021 | REFORGER 78 - MAC | 49" __76" | Reforger 78 shows the "Flying Bridge" of a C-5 aircraft from MAC/Military Air Transport Command. The source of information comes from observing that reforger operation from loading at Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs thru Goose Bay, Labrador to Frankfort, Germany. Operation Reforger 78 (Return of forces to Germany) encompassed the movement of a staggering amount of personnel, equipment, and supplies form airfields in the U. S. to Germany in compliance with our commitment to our NATO ally. No one place of arrival or departure was as visually or emotionally significant as the dwarfing of man under the logistical load - his relationship to a technical nightmare, taken so much for granted by those of us in "the star war" age. Hence, the stripping of this work to it basics man and robot machine and the struggle to test if freeman is able to prevail against a philosophy where man and robot are now one. For those who love statistics, the plane depicted carries a fuel load of 318,000 pounds, better by 1,000 pounds over the total weight; i.e..; plane, fuel and payload of the C-141 in the background. | 2:2A | __AMO __Art Program | Acrylic | ||

I used the 92nd Bomb Group A/C as the basis for the B-17s because they, and their crews had been in England, diverted for African duty, and then back to England. Historical research was done with the help of the McDonnell Douglas Historian and the extensive works of Roger Freeman. The closet B-17 is a B-17 F 75DL. Although in appearance close to the "G" model one should notice the old style upper turret. The moniker on it is one invented by me. The Douglas historian upon viewing it stated it was extremely accurate for the time setting I wished to portray. | 2:6B | __AMO __Art Program | Oil __Canvas | ||

| 1962.014 | GENERAL CURTIS E LEMAY | 48" __58" | Official portrait of General Curtis Emerson Lemay, Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, 1961 - 1965. LeMay was born at Columbus, Ohio, on 15 November 1906. He attended Columbus public schools and the Ohio State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree. In 1928 he entered the armed services as a flying cadet. He completed pilot training at Kelly Field, Texas, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Corps Reserves in October 1929. He received a Regular Commission in January 1930. The General's first tour of duty was with the 27th Pursuit Squadron at Selfridge Field, Michigan. He served in various assignments in fighter operations before transferring to bomber aircraft in 1937. General LeMay participated in the first mass flight of B-17 Flying Fortresses to South America in 1938. This earned the 2nd Bomb Group the Mackay Trophy for outstanding aerial achievement. Prior to entry into World War II, he pioneered air routes over the South Atlantic to Africa and over the North Atlantic to England. General LeMay organized and trained the 305th Bombardment Group in 1942 and led that organization to combat in the European Theater. He developed formation procedures and bombing techniques that were used by B-167 bomber units throughout the European Theater of Operations. These fundamental procedures and techniques were later adapted to the B-29 Super Fortresses which fought the war to its conclusion in the Pacific. As Commanding General of the 3rd Bombardment Division, (England), he led the famed Regensberg raid, a B-17 shuttle mission that originated in England, struck deep in Germany, and terminated in Africa. In July 1944 he was transferred to the Pacific to direct the B-29 heavy bombardment activities of the 20th Bomber Command in the China-Burma-India Theater. He later commanded the 21st Bomber Command with headquarters on Guam, and still later became Chief of Staff of the Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific. At the conclusion of World War II, he returned to the United States piloting a Super Fortress (B-29), on a non-stop, record flight from Hokkaido, Japan, to Chicago, Illinois. The General's first post-war assignment was to Headquarters, Air Materiel Command. He was then transferred to the Pentagon at Washington, D.C., to be the first Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Research and Development. In October 1947 General LeMay was selected to command the U.S. Air Forces in Europe with headquarters at Wiesbaden, Germany. He organized air operations for the famous Berlin Airlift. A year later he returned to the United States, assumed command of the newly formed Strategic Air Command, and established its headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. This central location was to become the nerve center of a world-wide bomber-missile force. Commanding SAC for nearly ten years he built, from the remnants of World War II, an all jet bomber force, manned and supported by professional airmen dedicated to the preservation of peace. Under his leadership and supervision, plans were laid for the developments and integration of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capability. In July 1957 the General was appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force and served in that capacity until July 1961, at which time he was appointed Chief of Staff. General LeMay died on October 1st, 1990. |
At the age of eighteen, artist Sandor Klein won a Pulitzer Prize for painting. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and spent time abroad honing his skills in Paris, Budapest, Vienna, and Rome. During World War II, he served as a combat artist in the United States Coast Guard. Klein built on that experience to establish himself as a portraitist, receiving important commissions to paint military officials.

| 1951.042 | GENERAL E W RAWLINGS | 40" __35" | Gen. Edwin W. Rawlings, USAF (Ret), (1904-1997) for whom an AFA chapter of more than 1,000 members is named, died at a nursing home in December in Auburn, Washington at age 93. A native of Milroy, Minn., Rawlings graduated with an economics degree from Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn., and became a flying cadet in February 1929. Almost 25 years to the day later, he became one of USAF's youngest generals, confirmed for a fourth star at 49. He had also, by then earned an MBA from Harvard. Eugene M. Zuckert, Secretary of the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, credits Rawlings with building a mature, business-like" image for the newly established Air Force. Zuckert said Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington asked him back in 1945 why he had to "send out a search party" whenever he needed Army Air Forces statistics. Zuckert remembered a memo suggesting the creation of a comptroller position and passed the idea on to Symington. In November 1946, Symington named Rawlings as air comptroller, helping to organize the office. The position was so successful and struck such a note--Rawlings did such a magnificent job--they adopted the idea of a comptroller for all three services. Zuckert said, "This was a very important step in the development of a postwar Air Force." In 1951, Rawlings became commander of Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, leading USAF's procurement and logistics efforts for seven years. Air Force Chief of Staff Thomas D. White credited him with spectacular increases in the effectiveness of the Air Force logistics, ... accomplished through new management methods, concepts, and philosophy, and thus the Air Force has been able to match the tempo of the jet, missile, and space era. Rawlings was a command pilot and combat and aircraft observer, whoe decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross, which he received in 1930 for his role in the rescue of an aircrew downed in the Pacific. He also received the Soldier's Medal in 1954 for rescuing his pilot who was lying underneath a B-17 that caught fire after landing at Wright-Patterson. After retiring from USAF in 1959, he went on to a career with General Mills, rising to become president and board chairman. Based in St. Pul, AFA's Gen.. E. W. Rawlings Chapter was chartered in August 1982. Also in his name, AFA and AEF in 1981 established the Gen.. Edwin W. Rawlings Award initally to recognize energy conservation achievements within USAF. Now the award recognizes and outstanding technician or manager in environmental matters. | 5:2A | __AMO __Art Program | Oil | |||
