About this file

This document provides supplemental specifications for an exterior painting project at the Coeur d'Alene Nursery. The specifications cover surface preparation and application of paint systems to concrete, steel, galvanized metal, and wood substrates. Requirements include using MPI-approved products listed in the specification manual for the appropriate paint systems. The project involves applying latex paints in semigloss finish to concrete, dressed lumber, and dimension lumber surfaces. Submittals must include product data, color samples, and an MPI product list highlighting proposed materials. Mockups are required to verify color selections and set quality standards. The federal agency soliciting this project is the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service Region 1 for the Coeur d'Alene Nursery.

B. Maximum Moisture Content of Substrates: When measured with an electronic moisture meter as follows: 1. Concrete: 12 percent. 2. Masonry (Clay and CMU): 12 percent. 3. Wood: 15 percent. 4. Plaster: 12 percent. 5. Gypsum Board: 12 percent.

C. Verify suitability of substrates, including surface conditions and compatibility with existing finishes and primers.

D. Begin coating application only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected and surfaces are dry.

1. Beginning coating application constitutes Contractor's acceptance of substrates and conditions.

3.2 PREPARATION AND APPLICATION

A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations in "MPI Architectural Painting Specification Manual" applicable to substrates and paint systems indicated.

B. Clean substrates of substances that could impair bond of paints, including dirt, oil, grease, and incompatible paints and encapsulants.

1. Remove incompatible primers and reprime substrate with compatible primers as required to produce paint systems indicated.

C. Apply paints to produce surface films without cloudiness, spotting, laps, brush marks, roller tracking, runs, sags, ropiness, or other surface imperfections. Cut in sharp lines and color breaks. Follow up with a brush or roller if a sprayer is used.
