Definition Establishing permanent vegetation on sites that have or are expected to have high erosion rates and on sites that have physical, chemical, or biological conditions that prevent the establishment of vegetation with normal practices.
Purposes Critical area planting may be applied as part of a resource management system to accomplish one or more of the following:
• Stabilize areas with existing or potential high rates of soil erosion by water.
• Stabilize areas with existing or potential high rates of soil erosion by wind.
• Restore degraded sites that cannot be stabilized through normal methods.
• Stabilize coastal areas, such as sand dunes and riparian areas.
Where used
Critical area planting may be used on highly disturbed areas such as active or abandoned mined lands, mine spoil, surface mined lands, urban conservation sites, road construction areas, cuts, fills, dams, dikes, temporary or abandoned access roads, areas needing stabilization before or after natural disasters, and other denuded or gullied areas where vegetation is difficult to establish by usual planting methods.
Resource Management System A Critical Area Planting is normally established concurrently with other conservation practices as part of a resource management system. These practices may include mulching, grass waterways, filter strips, diversions and grade stabilization structures.
Specifications
Site-specific requirements for critical area planting are listed on the 342 OR Specification Sheet.
Specifications are prepared in accordance with the NRCS Field Office Technical Guide and are designed to meet the resource needs and the producer’s objectives.
Operation and maintenance
Use of the planted area shall be managed as long as necessary to stabilize the site. Inspections, reseeding or replanting, fertilization, and pest control may be needed to insure the planting functions as intended through out its expected life.

Text97: Management and Maintenance Requirements: During the first year (or two) of establishment, undesirable weeds may become a
problem. Seeded areas may need to be sprayed and/or mowed as necessary to prevent undesirable weeds from producing seed and further competing with the seeded species. The site will be monitored for noxious weeds or other problematic species. If found, NRCS will assist with the development of a weed management plan.
Text98:
Text99:
Text100: Use seed that is at least 72% Pure Live Seed (PLS). PLS is calculated by multiplying %Germination X % Purity.
For example, seed that is 90% Pure and has 70% Germination has PLS = 90% X 70% = 63%. The example seed mix would not be acceptable.
No minimum % ground cover required, but monitor seeding during establishment and growth to determine that sufficient cover is provided and erosion and sediment delivery to surface water is minimized.
Text101:
Additional Requirements - A Brillion or similar broadcast seeder, with at least two seed boxes, one capable of handling large seed and one capable of handling small seed, will be used to distribute seed. After seeding, if necessary, the site will be lightly harrowed and rolled to ensure sufficient seed-soil contact. Seed depth 1/4 inch.
Seeding will take place between October 15 and November 1 and before measurable snow accumulates.
Note: In areas where it is not practicable to use a large tractor towed seeder, an ATV towed drop seeder or a hand operated broadcast seeder may be used if sufficient agitation/mixing is maintained to ensure even distribution of each species/seed size. Seeding will take place in the Fall after levees are refurbished. See (657) Wetland Restoration practice specification and engineering design
Seeding/Planting - A locally sourced selection of native species adapted to the restored conditions is compatible with the project objectives of restoring the historic plant community. A fall seeding has a good likelihood for successful establishment and addresses the soil erosion/sediment delivery resource concern in a timely manner.
