Wetland vegetation and hydrology, along with micro topographic features, will be returned to original conditions to the extent practicable. These conditions will support historic inland saltgrass alkaline wet meadow and hardstem bulrush freshwater emergent marsh plant communities. In addition, adjacent upland areas will be restored to native basin big sagebrush and black greasewood plant communities, which include a number of native bunchgrasses and forbs under natural conditions.

Revegetation to restore native plant communities will include mechanical treatments to reduce biomass and/or alter community composition and chemical treatments to remove and manage undesirable vegetation.

A locally sourced selection of native species adapted to the restored conditions is compatible with the project objectives of restoring the historic plant community. Seeding will take place in the fall after November 1 and before measurable snow accumulates. After seeding, entire site will be packed to facilitate seed-soil contact and mulched with weed free straw. The attached Seeding Plan Map shows locations for site specific seed mixes. Note: In areas where it is not practicable to use a large broadcast seeder, then a hand operated broadcast seeder may be used if sufficient agitation/mixing is maintained to ensure even distribution of each species/seed. See attached seed mixes

Formerly cropped areas consist largely of weeds including cheatgrass, introduced thistles, and several broadleaf species. This undesirable herbaceous vegetation will be controlled through mechanical and chemical means. Treatment areas will be mowed, disked, planted to winter cover, and broadcast sprayed up to 3 times a year for 3 years before seeding native vegetation, followed with 2 years of post-plant weed control.

Brillion or similar broadcast seeder, with at least two seed boxes, one capable of handling large seed (i.e., Creeping wildrye, Bluebunch wheatgrass) and one capable of handling small seed (i.e., Basin big sagebrush and Baltic rush) will be used to distribute seed. After seeding, if necessary, the site will be lightly harrowed or packed to facilitate sufficient seed-soil contact. Seed depth NTE 1/8 in.

FERTILIZERS AND AMENDMENTS

Operation and Maintenance: (check all that apply)

☐ Mowing and harvest operations in perennial crop systems such as orchards, vineyards, berries, and nursery stock shall be done in a manner which minimizes the generation of particulate matter.

☒ If wildlife habitat enhancement is a purpose, maintenance practices and activities shall not disturb cover during the reproductive period for the desired species. Exceptions should be considered for periodic burning or mowing when necessary to maintain the health of the plant community.

☒ Maintenance measures must be adequate to control noxious weeds and other invasive species.

☒ To benefit insect food sources for grassland nesting birds, spraying, or other control of noxious weeds shall be done on a “spot” basis to protect forbs and legumes that benefit native pollinators and other wildlife.

Spot Foliar spraying will be used to control weeds after establishment of native species.
