About this file

This document is a comprehensive graphic design and exhibit plan for the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, dated 5.30.2025. The project encompasses multiple graphic and audiovisual elements designed to tell the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition, including interactive panels, murals, flip panels, maps, and exhibit displays. Key components include intro flip panels exploring Napoleon's and Jefferson's strategies, an outbound map of the expedition route, wilderness and animal identification panels, interactive exhibits about river travel and tribal games, and conclusion panels discussing the expedition's impact on Native American cultures.

The design uses a carefully curated color palette and typography, with graphic types including flip panels, photos, murals, graphic rails, and floor-mounted activities. Manufacturers like 3M and Koroseal are specified for different graphic applications. The exhibit aims to provide an immersive educational experience, using historical quotes, period photographs, and interactive elements to engage visitors in the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition, its interactions with Native American tribes, and its significance in early 19th-century American expansion.

When Spain suddenly closes the port of New Orleans to American shipping, a French maneuver is suspected.

Hot-headed westerners talk war.

A Strategic Sale In January 1803, Napolean learns that 50,000 French troops have perished trying to control Santo Domingo, West Indies. Without Santo Domingo as a base of operations, he can’t protect New Orleans from the British, so he decides to sell.

Napoleon offers Louisiana to the United States. He believes the deal will create a new rival for his archenemy, the British, and secure American good will for France.

Congress Approves Deal Napoleon surprises American ambassadors, James Monroe and Robert Livingston, with his offer to sell Louisiana. Both know a good deal when they see one.

Although authorized to spend only $6 million to by New Orleans and the Floridas, they boldly buy all of the Louisiana territory for $11,250,000, or about 4¢ an acre.

The purchase is considered one of the greatest real estate bargains in history. The deal also erases a $3,750,000 French debt owed in claims to United States citizens.

Jefferson is elated. By November 3, 1803, Congress authorizes the President to take possession of Louisiana.
