About this file

This is a technical specification document for the fabrication and delivery of magnetic shielding components. The requirement calls for 65 pieces of tungsten-impregnated polymer shielding (Document No. 5303ZN01, PC 1 of Drawing 2370.2-7445). The shielding shall be constructed from a homogenous matrix of tungsten powder and silicone rubber containing approximately 95 percent tungsten by weight with a magnetic layer capable of holding double the weight of each individual piece. The components must meet specific dimensional attributes per the referenced drawing, maintain a minimum density of 7 g/cc, achieve a tenth value layer (TVL) of 2.00 inches or better for radiation shielding, and be shaped to fit flush around an 8-inch Schedule 40 pipe with no gaps. Products must not contain yellow or magenta coloring and shall be labeled with "RF-7445" and weight using contrasting colors.

The vendor must provide certified test reports with quantitative data demonstrating compliance with density and dimensional requirements, signed and dated by the vendor's Quality Assurance representative and traceable to the purchase contract. All materials shall be tested per MIL-STD-2041 Rev E, Notice 1 for detrimental materials, with allowable limits of 250 ppm for leachable bromides, chlorides, fluorides, and sulfur, and mercury not exceeding 10 ppm. Previously completed testing within four years is acceptable if accompanied by manufacturer certification of no formulation or process changes. Shielding components must be clean, free from defects, and appropriately palletized with individual pallet loads not exceeding 3,000 pounds, compliant with Department of Transportation safety regulations. Partial shipments are acceptable.

E. Testing for detrimental materials is required. Quantitative test reports shall be provided as evidence that all materials used have been tested in accordance with Appendix A, Section A.6 of MIL-STD-2041 Rev E, Notice 1 Control of Detrimental Materials, and that the materials do not exceed the following limits:

BROMIDES 250 PPM (LEACHABLE)*

CHLORIDES 250 PPM (LEACHABLE)*

FLUORIDES 250 PPM (LEACHABLE)*

SULFUR 250 PPM (LEACHABLE)*

MERCURY SHALL NOT EXCEED 10 PPM

*At the option of the vendor, total levels of each halogen and sulfur may be determined in lieu of water-leachable levels per MIL-STD-2041 Rev E, Notice 1.

If the materials have been satisfactorily tested within the last four years, a copy of those test reports and a statement by the manufacturer that there has been no changes in the formulation or manufacturing process shall be submitted and is acceptable in lieu of performing additional detrimental material analyses.

F. Shielding shall be clean, well finished and free from foreign matter, cracks, holes, or other defects that may affect appearance or serviceability.

G. Shielding shall be appropriately palletized and packaged to provide adequate protection for shipping and storing.

Each shipping pallet shall have a maximum loaded weight of not more than 3000 pounds. The loaded pallet shall comply with all D.O.T. Safety regulations. Partial shipments are acceptable.

H. Vendor shall provide Certified Test Reports that provide quantitative data to verify that the materials provided meet the requirements of Table (2), Attributes (1) through (3). Test Reports shall be signed and dated by the vendor’s Quality Assurance rep. and shall be traceable to the purchase contract under which the material is provided.
