About this file

This is a technical engineering drawing for a Cutting Shield Attachment component for Norfolk Naval Shipyard's Reactor Servicing division (Code 2370). The drawing specifies the fabrication and assembly of a radiation shielding device composed of six primary components: a base ring (PC 1), reducer ring (PC 2), top ring (PC 3), motor tube pipe (PC 4), extension pipe (PC 5), and exterior pipe (PC 6), with high-density shielding material fill (PC 7). All carbon steel components must conform to ASTM A106 Grade B, ASTM A53 Grade B, API Grade B, or approved equivalents. The shielding material must provide a Tenth Value Layer (TVL) of 2 inches or greater.

The drawing imposes stringent fabrication and quality assurance requirements. All welds must comply with AWS D1.1 standards with mandatory Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Visual Testing (VT) inspections. The finished assembly requires a matte black powder coating with threads in PC 3 remaining clean. Fabrication Note 7 requires extensive torque testing and inspection of 1/2"-13UNC-2B X 1" tapped holes in PC 1, including SAT go/no-go gauge verification, post-load VT and MT inspections per NAVSEA Technical Publication T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 and MIL-STD-2035 criteria, with documentation of all torque certification papers and NDT reports submitted to NNSY. All components feature precision machining tolerances (±0.02" for critical surfaces) and chamfered edges as specified. The drawing was originally issued on October 14, 2025, and is classified as Unclassified.

FABRICATION NOTES

# NOTE

Perform Torque Test and Inspection of the tapped holes in PC 1 IAW the following sub steps:

1. Obtain 2 each 1/2"-13UNC-2A alloy steel socket head cap screws or equivalent and cut to reduce the shank lengths to

7/8” (+1/16”, -0”) to ensure cap screws do not bottom out in tapped holes. Chase cut ends to ensure threads are SAT;

use 1/2"-13UNC nut to verify. N/A this step if cap screw shank lengths are within limits specified above.

2. Apply neolube lubricant or equivalent meeting commercial item description A-A-59004A requirements including coefficient of friction range (Molykote P37 or equivalent) to 1/2"-13UNC-2A cap screw threads and underside of heads.

3. Install cap screws with 1/2" hardened washers (SAE J404 (4140) or equivalent UNS #G41400) to the 1/2"-13UNC-2B X

1” L tapped holes. Torque test bolts to 28 ft-lbs. (+5%, -0%.). Hold torque for 10 minutes.

4. Clean out the lubricant from the 1/2"-13UNC-2B X 1” L tapped holes to support NDT inspections. Prepare the tapped holes and adjacent base metal surfaces within 1” (min.) of the edge of the holes, ensuring they are sufficiently clean for

NDT inspections.

5. Following torque test, check the 1/2"-13UNC-2B X 1” L tapped holes with appropriately sized go/no-go gauge.

Additionally, perform visual inspection of the tapped hole threads using the criteria listed below.

•90% of the total thread length remains unaffected.

•No discontinuity or cavity extending below the minimum minor diameter of external threads or maximum major diameter of internal threads are present.

•No cracks.

•No defects below the thread root.

•No corrosion (a thin film of surface rust is acceptable).

6. Perform a post-load VT inspection of the 1/2"-13UNC-2B X 1” L tapped holes. Inspect per NAVSEA Technical Publication

T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 (latest revision) with acceptance criteria to MIL-STD-2035 (latest revision). VT area shall encompass the base metal, in a full circle, beginning at the edge of the hole and extending out 1/2" (min.) to the max extent practical.

7. Perform a post-load MT inspection of the 1/2"-13UNC-2B X 1” L tapped holes. Inspect per NAVSEA Technical

Publication T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 (latest revision) with acceptance criteria to MIL-STD-2035 (latest revision). MT area shall encompass the base metal, in a full circle, beginning at the edge of the hole and extending out 1/2" (min.) to the max extent practical.

Provide the following documentation:

1.A copy of all torque test certification papers shall be submitted to NNSY for each tapped hole.

2.Documentation of SAT go/no-go gauge check and SAT visual inspection of tapped hole threads for each tapped hole.

3.A copy of all NDT (VT & MT) reports shall be submitted to NNSY for each tapped hole.
