About this file
This is a Detailed Product Specifications document for 12 GHz Vector Signal Generators issued by the CTL/Quantum Communications Division, Scalable Quantum Computing Group.
The Government requires 2 precision vector signal generators with quadrature modulated (I/Q) output and high dynamic range (-110 dBm to +15 dBm). The generators must synthesize pulsed microwave frequencies from 100 MHz to 12 GHz with I/Q modulator bandwidth exceeding 500 MHz. Key requirements include phase-locking capability via 1 GHz or higher reference frequency clock for synchronization over multiple days, small form factor (19" by 1U maximum, under 15 lb) for rack mounting with individual portability, and procurement from a single manufacturer for compatibility. The specified brand is Rhode & Schwarz SGS100A or equal. Critical electrical specifications include frequency error less than 0.1 PPM, spectral purity with harmonics below -30 dBc, SSB phase noise below -100 dBc at 20 kHz carrier offset, pulse generator capability (20 ns to 100 µs width with 10 ns resolution), fast remote setting time under 1 ms, and standard 110V 60 Hz AC input with power consumption below 100 W. The equipment must be new with original manufacturer's full warranty and U.S.-based service support. Environmental specifications require 0°C to 40°C ambient operation with warm-up time under 15 minutes. NIST will conduct final inspection and testing within 14 days of delivery, including validation of I/Q modulator bandwidth, remote programming capability via USB and Ethernet, low phase noise performance, and power output specifications from 15 dBm to low power limits.

Detailed Product Specifications for 12 GHz Vector Signal Generator CTL/Quantum Communications Division
Scalable Quantum Computing Group
Statement of Need:
The Government requires 2 precision vector signal generators with quadrature modulated output (I/Q) and a high dynamic range (output power range: -110 dBm to +15 dBm). Both generators are needed to synthesize pulsed microwave frequencies in the 100 MHz to 12 GHz band. The type of I/Q modulated pulses we need requires a modulator with 500 MHz bandwidth or higher. In some applications, these generators need to be interconnected to each other and “phase-locked” so their outputs remain synchronized over a time period of days.
We have found that to accomplish this, the phase-locking must be to a 1 GHz (or higher) frequency clock (reference frequency input and output). The synthesizers must also have a small physical size so we can fit many in a single electronics rack but also have the flexibility to move them individually wherever needed, so a single unit with 2 I/Q channels (4 channels total) is not acceptable. We require that both systems are from the same manufacturer for compatibility with remote programming and operation and with phase-locking
