1. GENERALITY
1.1. Subject of the Contract
The object of this contract concerns the works relating to:
• the replacement of a segment of the sewer network with insufficient hydraulic capacity and obsolete characteristics, including the related manholes connected to the main stormwater drainage and combined sewer system of Villa Taverna
• the optimization of the sewer network section through the elimination of an intermediate handhole.
The works are located within the pertinent area of the park known as "VILLA TAVERNA."
The works covered by this contract, as described in this Scope of Work (hereinafter "SOW"), must be complete in all their parts — including all elements necessary for a complete and workmanlike execution, even if not expressly mentioned — and must be suitable for meeting the anticipated operational requirements.
For a complete identification of the works, please refer to the technical conditions set forth in this
SOW and to the accontractoring drawings
1.2. General Requirements of the Work
All the works described in the descriptive and graphic documents must be carried out in the most scrupulous observance of the Laws, rules and regulations, in any case, in a workmanlike manner.
All non-reusable removal materials contemplated in this contract shall be transported to authorized public landfills, or to locations indicated by the Client, at the sole care and expense of the Contractor. Appropriate transport documentation and proof of delivery to authorized disposal facilities must be provided; failing this, the works shall not be considered compensated.
It also remains established that all costs relating to site inspections and surveys that the
Contractor deems most appropriate during the construction site or temporary site inspection are included and compensated for in the lump-sum prices referred to in this contract.
Prior to the start of work, the Contractor must provide the Client with:
within days 30 (thirty) calendar and consecutive days, including holidays and semi-holidays from the date of the Notice to Proceed:
a construction and assembly plan, complete in every detail, based on the tender documents and signed by the Contractor's technical staff responsible for its preparation;
a detailed work schedule;
Upon delivery of the works, the Contractor will arrange at its own expense to organize and set up the site within the area dedicated to the works, being responsible for the custody of means and materials.
All charges relating to demolitions, removals and clearing of bushes of the relative areas of intervention must be considered included and compensated, including handling on site, any lifting and lowering, loading and transport to landfill of resulting materials and download charges.
All the charges relating to the preparation of all the temporary works, such as delimitations and anything else necessary for the safe execution of the works relating to the intervention in question, are also to be considered included and compensated in the lump sum prices.
Any material used (“gravel, scree…”) to make the site area suitable for vehicles is included.
With regard to removals and excavations, these must be carried out in an orderly manner and with the necessary precautions, in order to prevent any injury to workers and to avoid inconvenience or disturbance to the performance of activities within the area.
The production of dust must be limited, therefore the resulting materials must be, if necessary, covered and contained in "removable" containers until they are disposed of.
For the indications referring to the constructional and dimensional characteristics of the artefacts, reference must be made to the description of the works and to the current state of the places, which the Contractor must have compulsorily examined in the places concerned.
Finally, it should be noted that the unit prices applied to the various work items/trades must therefore include general expenses, any costs for design, assembly and assembly, Contractor profits, charges for labour, transport, freight and materials, etc.
1.3. Project Manager Site Presence and Reporting
The Project Manager shall be present on site on a daily basis for the entire duration of the works.
Prior to each site visit, the Project Manager shall notify the COR of his/her presence. At the end of each working day, the Project Manager shall submit to the COR a written daily inspection report in English, documenting the activities carried out, the number and roles of personnel on site, the status of materials and equipment deliveries, any issues or non-conformities identified, and any actions taken or planned to address them. The daily inspection report shall be submitted in a format approved by the COR and shall constitute an official record of the progress of the works. Failure to maintain the required site presence or to submit the daily inspection report may be considered a material breach of contract obligations.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKS
The design of the works aims to replace a reach of the existing sewer line and to optimize the network through the elimination of an intermediate manhole located within the "VILLA TAVERNA" grounds, approximately in front of the main façade of the villa.
Figure 1 – Orthophoto showing the sewer network under consideration (indicated by the red circle)
More specifically, the works will concern:
• Fencing of the construction site areas and preparation of the storage area and, if required, a temporary access path for Villa Taverna users;
• Removal of existing porphyry cobblestones, cleaning, and storage for future reinstallation;
• Demolition of road foundations (screeds of any type);
• Excavation with a fixed cross-section until the existing pipes are reached, removal of the existing pipes, and further excavation to the depth required to achieve the necessary gradients;
• Installation of new purpose-built pipelines;
• Demolition and replacement or reconstruction of collection and junction manholes;
• Reinstatement of the standard cross-section, as shown in Drawing No. A102, with sand bedding, compacted backfill, a 10 cm concrete screed, and the previously removed porphyry cobblestones;
• Replacement of all cast iron covers with D400-rated covers;
• Testing of the sewer line;
• Construction site dismantling and cleaning of all affected areas.

2.1. Typical Section
The trench cross-section shall be of the minimum dimensions necessary to carry out the works safely.
The new pipe shall be laid on a sand bed and subsequently covered with sand to a minimum depth of
10 cm above the crown of the pipe. The trench shall then be backfilled with the excavated material up to the level established by the COR.
Once the backfill has been compacted, a concrete screed reinforced with electro-welded mesh (Φ6/20
cm) and a minimum thickness of 10 cm shall be cast in place. This ensures greater resistance to the loads from above and to potential ground movement below.
Finally, the porphyry cobblestones shall be repositioned in accordance with the description provided in the following paragraph.
Picture 5 – Typical Section
2.2. Installation of Pipes
With regard to the pipelines, PVC pipes for sewage shall be used, with the following specifications:
• Pressure rating: PN16;
• Diameter: 225 mm;
• thickness: 13.4 mm;
• Colour: Dark grey, RAL 7011;
• Joints: Socket and rubber ring joints included;
The Contractor may choose among the following joint types:
• Rubber ring socket joint, type FORSHEDA 601 POWER-LOCK;
• Solvent cement (glued) socket joint;
• Plain end joint.
2.3. Installation of Porphyry Cubes
A bedding layer shall be laid on the concrete screed, consisting of coarse sand or crushed stone (3–6 mm grain size), or dry-mixed sand and cement in the appropriate proportions. The bedding layer shall have a minimum thickness of 5 cm to ensure adequate levelling and load distribution.
The porphyry cobblestones previously removed during the excavation works shall be carefully cleaned, inspected, and sorted prior to reinstallation. Damaged or broken elements shall be set aside and replaced with new cobblestones of matching size, colour, and material. The reinstallation must match the pattern and geometry of the existing paving. Given the exposure to heavy vehicle traffic, only cobblestones with a minimum thickness of 10 cm shall be used, in accordance with the requirements for heavy-duty paving applications.
The bedding layer shall then undergo wetting and compaction ("beating"). This phase is essential to achieve stable compaction of the bedding layer and to stabilize the porphyry elements. Compaction shall be carried out using a mechanical plate compactor to ensure uniformity and resistance to the dynamic loads induced by heavy vehicle traffic.
Sealing may be carried out in various ways. In this project, cement grout shall be used — a semi-liquid mixture made of sand of suitable grain size, mixed with cement and water in appropriate proportions.
The cement grout sealing will stabilize the porphyry elements, bond them firmly to one another, prevent weed growth, and discourage insect nesting.
Upon completion of the sealing phase, a curing period of no less than 48 hours shall be observed before the reinstated surface is reopened to vehicle traffic, and no less than 7 days before heavy vehicle traffic is permitted, in order to allow adequate cement hydration and strength development.
The finished surface shall comply with a planarity tolerance of ±3 mm over a 3-metre straightedge, ensuring a safe and even surface for both pedestrian and vehicular use.
The works shall be carried out in compliance with UNI EN 1342 (Natural stone paving for external areas) and any other applicable Italian and European standards in force.
Finally, the Contractor shall proceed with the final cleaning of all affected areas, including the removal and disposal of all waste materials resulting from the paving works.
2.4. Removal and Replacement of Existing Manholes
The existing manholes, built with solid brick masonry bonded with cement mortar, have been assessed as inadequate and no longer fit for purpose. Due to the inherent heterogeneity of the materials used, combined with the lateral pressure exerted by the surrounding soil and tree root intrusion, the manhole walls have lost their vertical alignment and present deformation and cracking at multiple points. As a result, the existing manholes are no longer watertight and are dispersing effluent into the surrounding soil, posing both a structural and an environmental risk. All existing manholes shall therefore be demolished and removed in their entirety, and the resulting materials disposed of in accordance with the provisions set out in this SOW.
The new manholes shall be of the precast reinforced concrete type, specifically designed for combined sewer systems, and shall comply with the applicable Italian and European standards, including UNI EN 1917 (Concrete manhole and inspection chambers). The internal clear width shall be not less than 600 mm, to allow safe and comfortable inspection and maintenance access.
To ensure structural stability and adequate resistance to lateral soil pressure, a concrete haunch shall be cast around the external base of each manhole. All pipe connections to the manhole shall be carried out using purpose-built openings or core-drilled holes, properly sealed with non-shrink cement mortar or hydraulic cement on the external face to ensure full watertightness. Any residual external openings shall likewise be fully sealed with cement mortar upon completion of the pipe connections.
To bridge the difference in level between the top of the manhole structure and the finished carriageway surface, the Contractor may use either precast concrete extension rings of the same type, without base slab, or solid brick coursing, up to a maximum of three courses.
Each manhole shall be fitted with a ductile iron cover and frame, rated D400 in accordance with UNI EN 124, suitable for heavy vehicle traffic loads. The cover and frame shall be connected to the manhole structure by means of cement mortar sealing to ensure stability and prevent displacement under dynamic loads.
Picture 6– Typical Section
2.5. Interferences in General
Prior to start of any works, the Contractor shall identify and locate all existing underground and above-ground utilities within the intervention area and its surroundings, including but not limited to electrical, water, gas, and telecommunications networks. The Contractor shall consult the relevant utility providers and obtain all necessary information regarding the position and depth of existing services, and shall notify them in advance of any works carried out in proximity to their infrastructure.
All identified utilities shall be adequately protected, respected, and/or relocated as required. In the immediate vicinity of known or suspected underground services, excavation shall be carried out manually to avoid accidental damage.
The interference work item includes all works, materials, and/or services necessary to ensure the full functionality of any utility affected by the works. This includes, but is not limited to, excavations and backfilling, the supply and installation of concrete, sand, inspection chambers, ductile iron manhole covers, and pipes of the same material, diameter, and characteristics as the existing ones.
The Contractor shall be solely responsible for any damage caused to existing utilities as a result of failure to carry out the preliminary identification and verification activities described above
2.6. Reconnection of Existing Lateral Connections to New Manholes All existing pipe connections found within the manholes to be replaced, other than those belonging to the main sewer line, shall be carefully identified, surveyed, and reconnected to the new inspection manhole. Such connections may include, but are not limited to, drainage pipes from surface gully gratings, rainwater collection systems, yard drains, and any other lateral connections discharging into the old and existing manholes.
Prior to demolition of the existing manholes, the Contractor shall carry out a thorough inspection of all incoming and outgoing pipe connections, recording their position, diameter, material, and invert level.
This information shall be used to ensure that all connections are accurately reinstated in the new manhole s at the correct levels and angles, so as to preserve the hydraulic continuity of the network.
During demolition and excavation works, the Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to avoid damaging the existing lateral pipes. Excavation in proximity to existing connections shall be carried out manually where required. Should any pipe be found to be damaged, either as a result of the works or due to pre-existing deterioration, the damaged section shall be replaced with a new pipe of identical internal diameter, material, and hydraulic characteristics.
All reconnections to the new manholes shall be made through purpose-built openings or core-drilled holes, sealed externally with non-shrink cement mortar or hydraulic cement to ensure full watertightness. The invert levels of all reconnected pipes shall be verified upon completion to ensure correct gradients and unobstructed flow.
All works described in this paragraph, including inspection, reconnection, any partial pipe replacement, sealing, and verification, are included and compensated within the lump-sum prices for this work item.
3. CONSTRUCTION SITE SAFETY
The Contractor shall be fully responsible for the safety of the construction site throughout the entire duration of the works, in strict compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in force, including Italian Legislative Decree No. 81/2008 (Consolidated Law on Health and Safety at Work) and any subsequent amendments.
Prior to start of any works, the Contractor shall prepare and submit to the Client a Site Safety Plan
(Piano Operativo di Sicurezza – POS), in accordance with the applicable regulations. The POS shall be kept on site at all times and made available for inspection upon request.
The construction site shall be properly fenced and delimited to prevent unauthorized access, protect third parties, and ensure the safety of all personnel working within the area. Appropriate signage shall be installed at all access points and along the perimeter of the site.
The Contractor shall provide and maintain all personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the safe execution of the works, including but not limited to helmets, high-visibility vests, safety footwear, gloves, and eye protection.
Given the nature of the works, which involve excavations and work in proximity to existing underground utilities, the Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to prevent the risk of collapse, flooding, or accidental damage to existing services. Excavations shall be shored or otherwise supported where required to ensure the safety of workers.
4. PROCEDURE FOR EXECUTING THE WORKS
4.1. Material acceptance rules
The materials required for the construction of the works, whatever their origin, shall be of the best quality, and will be considered accepted only when, at the unquestionable judgment of the COR, they correspond to those designated below in terms of nature, quality, durability, suitability and application. Except for special materials, all the works must come from quarries, factories, refineries, etc., deposits. chosen exclusively by the Contractor, which cannot make any exceptions, if during the course of the cultivation of the quarries, or operation of the factories, establishments, refineries, etc. the materials no longer met the prescribed requirements, or were missing and it was therefore obliged to resort to other quarries, in different locations, or of different origins, it being understood that, even in such cases, the stability unit prices in the list will remain unchanged and the sums for lump sum fees, as well as all that is observed to the quality and individual materials.
4.2. General rules
The articles below establish the execution rules for the various works contemplated in this
Contract, as well as the technical specifications of the materials to be used.
As a general rule, the Contractor shall execute all works in accordance with best industry practices and in a workmanlike manner, and shall comply with the specific requirements set out in the following articles. For categories of works not covered by this SOW, and for which no specific rules have been prescribed, including any works to be carried out on a time-and-materials basis, the Contractor shall follow the best procedures dictated by current technical standards and shall comply with any instructions issued by the COR for such purposes.
Any works that, for whatever reason, are found to be defective or improperly executed, whether immediately or at a later stage, shall be redone entirely at the Contractor's sole expense. No formal request from the COR shall be required for this purpose. The Contractor may not invoke the presence of a Client's representative or inspector on site as grounds for exemption from this liability.
4.3. Quality of Materials
All the works envisaged by this SOW can be performed in perfect working order and with materials that meet the technical specifications indicated and/or referred to in this SOW and in the annexed documents.
The quality of the material used in the execution of these works must meet, when not otherwise specified by Contractor rules or regulations, the requisites required by the laws in force and by the official standards of good construction techniques.
The Client, during construction and at any time, may take material samples from the manufactured articles used to verify their perfect correspondence with the approved types.
In this case, the Contractor will have to make an operating team available to the client to carry out the activities necessary for the execution of these checks, carried out with the help of a specific specialized Contractor. These charges will be charged to the Contractor, including any demolition and reconstruction of the works found to be non-compliant.
The Contractor must promptly report any defect or anomaly found on the materials supplied directly by the Principal.
4.4. Equivalent Materials
The Contractor shall verify and ensure that all materials supplied are new, free from defects, and that their use and/or installation is carried out using the best available techniques, in full compliance with the manufacturers' instructions and recommendations.
All special or custom-fabricated components shall be manufactured exclusively by qualified specialists with proven expertise in the relevant sector.
The brands and products indicated in this SOW are provided for reference purposes only, and the term "or approved equivalent" shall be deemed implicit throughout the document. The brands and products listed are therefore considered interchangeable, provided that the proposed alternatives meet the same technical, functional, and quality requirements as those specified.
Any alternative products or brands proposed by the Contractor shall be subject to prior approval by the COR. The Contractor shall submit, in advance, product samples and the relevant technical data sheets for evaluation. No alternative material or product shall be procured, delivered to site, or installed prior to receiving the COR's approval. Any material installed without prior approval from the COR may be rejected and shall be removed and replaced at the Contractor's sole expense.
4.5. Work for Sewer Line
1) Pipe handling
a) Loading, transport and unloading
Loading, transport by any means, unloading and all maneuvers in general must be carried out with the greatest possible care, using means according to the type and diameter of the pipes and adopting all the necessary precautions in order to avoid breakage, cracks injuries or damage in general to the materials constituting the pipes themselves and their coating, if any.
Therefore, protruding and protruding bodies, excessive sliding, contact with which deterioration or deformation of the pipes can still occur. In the construction site one must prepare what is necessary (one will have to prepare to install the pipes, the special pieces and the accessories to be installed).
b) Stacking and storage
The stacking must be carried out by arranging the pipes in stacks in pitches suitably located along the route on a flat and stable area, sheltered from the sun's rays in the case of pipes subject to deformation or deterioration caused by significant thermal variations.
The base of the stacks must rest on suitably spaced tables or on a suitable support bed.
The height will be contained within the limits suitable for the materials and diameters, to avoid deformations in the base pipes and to allow easy sampling.
Stacked pipes can be blocked with wedges to avoid sudden rolling; protective measures, in any case, must be adopted to prevent the heads of the pipes from being damaged in any way.
The ends of the pipes intended for the conveyance of water for human consumption must be protected with suitable caps, in order to avoid dirtying the internal surfaces. For deformable pipes, the ends will be reinforced with provisional crosspieces. The joints, gaskets, bolts and materials in general the rays deposited, if perishable, be rays deposited, until the time of their use, in closed spaces inside containers protected from the sun or from heat sources from with oils or fats and not subjected to loads.
2) Excavation for the pipeline
a) Preliminary excavation operations
Signage of the construction site on the road.
For pipelines to be laid on the road, the Contractor, who remains solely responsible for the suitability and regularity of the road signs, is required to arrange for the laying and efficient maintenance of the prescribed signals, warning signs, trestles, walkways, sheet metal of any type measure and size, lighting, traffic light systems, etc., as well as any surveillance and protection of the works, according to the provisions in force on the subject.
The Contractor will remain solely responsible, in the event that, as a result of the unreported and reported works, an accident of the works occurs and as specified in other points of the work and persons.
3) Pipe laying
a) Laying of pipes on site
During the laying operation, it must be avoided that debris or foreign bodies of any kind enter the inside of the pipes and that their internal surface is in any case damaged; the ends of each section of the pipeline during the plant must in any case be closed with a wooden plug, it being forbidden to carry out these closures in any other way.
The installation must be carried out by personnel and at least one installer must have the qualification of plumber.
The two ends of the pipe to be positioned will be cleaned with a suitable brush, eliminating any traces of earth or other foreign material.
The laying of the pipes will be carried out on the flattened and leveled bottom of the cable, eliminating any roughness that could damage pipes and coatings.
The laying bed will consist, in the cases in which it is prescribed by the lower management of works for a continuous support of the pipeline, in a layer of sand that does not contain small stones, spread on the bottom of the excavation, with a thickness of not more than 15 cm measured under the generatrix of the pipe that will be laid there.
If the pipes are to be laid on rocky ground and it is not possible to remove all the roughness, the thickness of the laying bed must be used suitably, by COR’s approval.
Where it becomes necessary to provide the bedding or to use materials other than those coming from the excavation for the first burial, one must ascertain the possible appearance of corrosive phenomena by adopting appropriate countermeasures.
In no case should the position of the pipes be regularized using stones or bricks or other discontinuous supports.
The laying surface - which will be leveled with special targets according to the excavation "levels"
(by placing and quoting stakes both in the points on the bottom of the pit that correspond to the vertical lines of the changes in slope and direction of the pipeline, and in intermediate points, so that the distance does not exceed 15 meters) must guarantee absolute continuity of support and, in sections where settlements are feared, particular measures must be taken such as: use of suitable suitable materials, special treatment of the bottom of the trench or , if necessary, stable discontinuous supports, such as saddles or shelves.
In the latter case, the discontinuity of contact between the pipe and the saddles will be ensured by the interposition of suitable material.
The exact position where the fittings or special pieces and equipment must be placed hydraulics must be recognized or approved by the COR .
The use of unessential sections of pipe is prohibited.
During the execution of the installation works, all necessary precautions must be taken to avoid damage to the pipeline elements already installed.
Therefore, with the necessary precautions during the works and with adequate supervision during periods of suspension, the fall of stones, boulders, etc. will be prevented. which can damage the pipes and appliances.
Appropriate embankments and detours will prevent the trenches from being invaded by the aqueous water and likewise, with backfilling carried out in due time without however involving the joints, it will be avoided that, if the flooding of the cables occurs despite every precaution, the pipelines that are empty and closed to extremes can be raised by the waters.
Any damage of any entity that occurs in such cases for lack of adoption of necessary precautions are the responsibility of the Contractor.
b) Installation of special pieces and hydraulic equipment .
Special pieces and plumbing fixtures will be placed following all restrictions before indicating for pipes. The special pieces will be perfectly coaxial with the pipes.
4.6. Interferences, Crossings, Parallelisms and Distances Between Subservices
1) Generalities
In those points, along the route of the excavations, where the presence of underground systems and pipelines of the electricity, water, gas, telephone, or other networks may be foreseen, the Contractor is obliged to arrange for its workers to use the utmost diligence and circumspection to prevent damage being caused to the personnel involved in the works and the services themselves.
To find out the location of the latter in advance, the Contractor must ask the Commission and possibly the Maintenance Manager.
It remains established that the Contractor himself will have to fully and directly trace any and all damage caused by the same as a consequence of the execution of the work committed, without any deriving from this to the Principal.
Inaccurate indications provided by the owners or managers of the underground services do not relieve the Contractor of responsibility for damages that the same may cause to the services themselves during the execution of the excavations.
2) Distances of the pipeline from existing pipes and underground cables
The pipeline will be kept at the maximum possible distance from other underground pipes and cables
(electricity, telephone, etc.).
For urban pipelines:
• in parallelisms, if exceptionally the distance is reduced to less than 30 cm, the coating will first of all be checked with particular care using a spark detector to verify continuity at every point and then a supplementary coating will be performed; in the event that there may be contact between the parties, dowels of insulating material (eg bakelized cloth, PVC, etc.) with a thickness of at least 1 cm will be inserted;
• at intersections there will be a distance of at least 30 cm; if exceptionally it should be reduced, a supplementary lining will be carried out as above for an extension of 10m upstream and 10m downstream; if there is a risk of contact between the parts (eg due to settling of the ground), a slab of insulating material will be interposed with a thickness of at least 1 cm, a width equal to 2
÷ 3 times the diameter of the largest pipe and a length depending on the position of the conducted to other pipes or cables.
4.7. Backfill
The backfill shall be performed with the indicator material in the project documents.
The material must be placed in the trench in 20-30 cm thick layers, abundantly watered and removed, compacted below and laterally to the tube, to obtain good support free from voids and to prevent lateral settlements and displacements. Where necessary, the abutment can be made of lean cement conglomerate.
In any case, the UNI standards will be observed as well as the indications of the pipe manufacturer.
Backfilling of the inspected joints.
Once the leak test has been carried out, the joints that may have been left uncovered for visual checks shall be backfilled, with the methods and materials established in the previous point 1).
Definitive backfill
Once the hydraulic test has been carried out, the backfilling will be completed with the methods and materials established in the previous point 1).
Once the backfilling is completed, top-ups shall be carried out in the off-road sections to allow the restoration of the level of the ground floor - as it will have to be at the time of testing - after the natural settling of the backfill.
In the trunks under the road care shall be taken to compact the backfill, proceeding with the necessary watering up to the level of the laying surface of the roadbed, reaching a degree of compaction and settling of the backfill account for which, once the restoration of the road structure, the walking surface of this does not undergo over time and due to the effect of traffic, even "heavy" in any way, with respect to the altimetric structure pre-existing to the laying operations. In the event that subsidence should occur, the Contractor, at its care and expense, must proceed with the appropriate and further compaction works and the restoration of the road structure, until obtaining the condition of stability.
4.8. Road Restorations
Restoration of floors in porphyry cubes
The paving of porphyry cubes must rest on a substrate prepared at the right heights and with the necessary slopes for the disposal of rainwater. The level of the foundation must be uniformly shaped less than:
9/10 cm for the cube type 4/6
12/14 cm for the cube type 6/8
15/16 cm for the 8/10 type cube
18/20 cm for the cube type 10/12
20/22 cm for the cube type 12/14
23/25 cm for the cube type 14/18 compared to the finished pavement.
First, a layer of sand of about 6 cm must be spread on the pre-established substrate, possibly dry premixed with cement (about 10 kg per m2).
The cubes must be placed perfectly close to each other so that the joints are of a maximum width of 1 to 2 cm depending on the type. A layer of sand and cement sufficient to fill the joints will then be placed after which wetting and simultaneous beating with a suitable mechanical vibrator will take place.
In the final phase of laying, any cubes that will be broken or deteriorated will be replaced. The flooring must be smooth and without deformation. The longitudinal or transversal slopes for the drainage of rainwater must be at least 1 / 2 %.
Sealing of pavements in cubes
An indispensable completion of a porphyry cube flooring is the sealing of the joints, which can be performed:
a) with simple sand: in order to fill the spaces left at the joints, the entire surface will be covered with a layer of sifted sand, which will have to slide and penetrate all the joints, even in several stages and at a distance over time , until completely closed;
b) with cement grout: prepare a "drink" in equal parts of fine sand, cement and water and spread it on the previously moistened floor so as to penetrate completely into each joint. This grout must be left to rest until it has started the setting process and, with a pressurized water jet, the thickest part covering the flooring must be removed. Finally, it will be necessary to proceed with the complete and accurate cleaning of the floor with 2 or 3 passages of sawdust, first wet and then dry. It is essential that the sealing takes place quickly, immediately after laying the cubes, possibly still within the day;
c) with hot bitumen: in penetration 50/80 or 80/100 depending on the latitude and exposure, and which is poured into the joints by hand, with the aid of spout cups or special funnels, passed over and sprinkled with sand end;
d) with emulsion or cold conglomerates. Surface cleaning with sand and sawdust;
e) other types of sealing are possible with special materials as long as they are tested and guaranteed, for example polyurethane resins poured with special equipment into the joints filled with crushed stone in suitable granulometry. Other procedures can be activated with asphalt mastics or with the addition of steel or synthetic fibers.
4.9. Installation of Manhole Covers
Before installation, the support surface of the closing and crowning devices must be suitably clean and wet; a bed of mortar containing 500 kg of type 425 cement per cubic meter of mix will then be spread, on which the painting will finally be placed. Alternatively, the works supervisor can order the use of special mortars.
The upper surface of the device must be, after installation, on the perfect plane of the road pavement. However, the thickness of the mortar that a thin layer is necessary must not exceed 3 cm; if greater thicknesses are required, alternatively, at the judgment of the Works
Management, the execution of a thin casting of conglomerate at 400 Kg. of cement type 425 per cubic meter of mix, packaged with aggregates of suitable granulometry and suitably reinforced, or the use of support rings in prefabricated reinforced concrete. Under no circumstances can stones, fragments, splinters or shards be inserted under the framework, dry or immersed in a bed of mortar.
If, following settling under load, the position of the framework should be adjusted, this must be removed and the remains of hardened mortar will be removed. The new layer of mortar will then be laid out, as previously indicated, adopting, if necessary, support rings.
The closing and crowning devices can be subjected to traffic no earlier than 24 hours after their installation, unless special mortars are used for the intervention. In the opinion of the Works
Management, to ensure the correct altimetric placement, to support the use of construction reinforcements, to be placed inside the small rooms and to be recovered after taking.
