About this file

The provided file is a detailed specification document for the Indian Creek Fence Construction project for the Bureau of Land Management's Idaho Falls District. The project involves constructing approximately 1,281 rods of four-wire fence with wood anchor structures, including 2 four-wire gates, 6 double swing four-wire gates, and 2 steel gates in Clark County, Idaho. The specifications provide comprehensive technical requirements for fence construction, including detailed specifications for materials such as barbed and barbless wire, steel and wood posts, gate closers, and installation techniques.

The document includes two fence types: a primary East and West Fence (1,087 rods) and an Exclosure Fence (194 rods), both using four-wire steel fence with wood stays. Specific technical details include wire spacing (16, 6, 8, and 12 inches), wood post lengths of 8 feet with 4-foot ground depth, steel T-post specifications, and requirements for wood stays, braces, and mechanical gate closers. The specification document covers material quality, treatment standards, installation methods, and provides a detailed data worksheet outlining precise measurements, wire types, post configurations, and quantities for each fence type.

M. Wood Posts and Braces:

INDIAN CREEK FENCE 323126-21

1. Acceptable Wood Posts and Braces:

a. Construction grade, either rough sawn or finished.

b. Sound single-stem members.

c. A slight bend in one plane is acceptable.

d. Posts and brace rails may be full stem members, sawed members of square cross section, or split members (western red cedar only).

e. Brace rails shall be 4 inches minimum diameter at the small end. Posts shall be 6 inches minimum diameter at the small end.

f. Sawed members shall be 4 x 4 rough sawn for brace rails, and 6 x 6 for posts.

g. Minimum cross-sectional area at the small end for split members shall be 10 in2 for brace rails, and 20 in2 for posts.

h. Post and braces shall be treated in accordance with AWPA P5.

i. Honey locust, western red cedar (full stem with bark removed), juniper, osage orange, and white oak are acceptable without treatment.

2. Basis for Rejection:

a. Posts are not acceptable when sweep causes a straight line joining the center of the top to the center of the butt to fall outside the body of the post, or at a point 2 inches or more from the center of the post.

b. Posts that are charred, twisted, rotted, or excessively bent are not acceptable.

c. Seasoning checks, single or opposite each other with a sum total equal to or more than 1/2 the thickness of the post are not acceptable.

8.2 WOOD TREATMENT PRACTICES

A. See Section 061063 – Exterior Rough Carpentry.

PART 9 - EXECUTION

9.1 PREPARATION

A. Clearing: Maximum clearing width is 6 feet on each side of the fenceline and around the exclosure. Provide minimum disturbance to existing grass and sod. Clearing shall be done according to Section 311100 - Clearing and Grubbing.

9.2 INSTALLATION

A. Steel posts shall not be used for H-brace, corner brace or gate posts. Set wood posts in dug holes unless written authorization is obtained for driving line posts. Drive steel posts. When treated members must be bored or cut during construction, thoroughly swab untreated surfaces with copper naphthenate in accordance with Section 061063 AWPA M4.

B. Setting Posts: Dig holes for setting wood posts to the depth as shown on the drawings. Set posts plumb and to the spacing, grades, and depths as shown on the drawings, unless staked otherwise.

INDIAN CREEK FENCE 323126-22

Space within 6 inches of that dimension shown on the drawings or in the Data Worksheet. Holes shall provide adequate open space around the post so backfill can be tamped the full depth around the post. Backfill gradually and uniformly with soil around each post. Compact backfill firmly from the bottom of the hole to the ground surface.

C. Driving Posts:

1. Wood Posts: Drive only when approved by the Contracting Officer to the depth shown on the Data Worksheet. Wood posts to be driven shall be machine-pointed on the end and have tapered end driven into ground. Drive posts plumb. Posts that are split, bent or broomed, will not be accepted.

2. Steel Posts: Drive into the ground to the depth shown on the drawings or until the anchor plate is slightly below the ground surface. Posts shall be driven plumb. When rock formations prevent driving, remove anchor plate and excavate or drill holes a minimum of 18 inches deep and slightly larger than the diameter of the post. Place posts in the holes and grout the post solidly in position with cement grout or mortar.

D. H-Brace, Coner Brace and Gate Post Assemblies: Construct as shown on the drawings or as staked in the field. Rock jacks shall not be substituted for these items. Construct stress panels on crests of hills, and a maximum of 1320 feet center-to-center for barbed wire sections. In addition, stress panels are required at points between which wire is to be stretched. Construct H-braces at the end of fence runs unless shown otherwise on the drawings. When rock or unusual conditions make the construction of wood H-braces impractical, steel H-braces may be constructed as shown on the drawings. Steel H-braces may be constructed according to manufacturer's recommendations and as shown on the drawings. Notify CO if steel H-braces are used.

E. Figure Fours and Rock Jacks: May be used in rock or other unusual conditions. Figure fours shall be used in lieu of steel posts, and rock jacks in lieu of wood line posts, except that where a series of figure fours are required, a rock jack shall be substituted for every fifth figure four. Figure fours and rock jacks shall be constructed as shown on the drawings.

F. Wire:

1. Stretch tightly and staple to wood posts or securely attach to steel posts with standard wire clips.

2. Wire is properly stretched when it is springy to the touch.

3. Drive staples crosswise with the grain of the wood.

4. The wire shall be free to move through the staples as it expands and contracts.

5. Drive staples into wood until the staple comes in contact with the wire against the post, but not so tight as to crimp the wire or prevent free movement of the wire between the post and the staple.

6. Terminate wire at each H-brace, corner brace, gate post, and stress panel.

7. Wrap wire around the post two times and tie off by wrapping around the incoming wire a minimum of four times.

G. Brace Wire: Double-loop and twist tight with a section of T-post. Leave one end of the stick long enough to fasten behind the horizontal brace to prevent wire from unwinding.

INDIAN CREEK FENCE 323126-23

H. Gates: Installed according to the Data Worksheet, the drawings, and as recommended by the manufacturer when applicable.

I. Mechanical Gate Closers: Line up the latch with the gate. Adjust latch assembly after installation so that the latch does not bind and the gate hangs properly.
