Statement of Work - Attachment 1 Restore Watson Store Windows and Doors at Nez Perce National Park
1. Project Location
Watson’s Store
Watson’s Store Rd, Spalding ID, 83540
2. Background
Part of Nez Perce National Historical Park, Historic Watson’s Store was constructed in 1911 and operated for 50 years serving the small town of Spalding, ID. When the store closed it was sold to the Nez Perce Tribe who then donated to Nez Perce National Historical Park. The building serves as a historical reminder of the acculturation of the Nez Perce people and early life on the reservation. Watson’s Store is a rectangular, one story, wood frame structure that measures approximately 53 feet wide by 52 feet deep and has a wood shingle roof. The wooden doors and windows, of the Watson Store, are beginning to show rotting and much of the window glazing is cracking and missing. In order to preserve and conserve the current windows and doors preservation treatments are needed so that can continue to be repaired and not replaced.
3. Project Description
This project is for the preservation of eight (8) wooden windows and (5) doors on the Watson Store, excluding the windows and doors of the glass store front. All preservation methods will adhere to the “Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment and Preservation of Historic Properties”. The goal of the project will be to preserve as much historic fabric of the original windows and doors as possible, while assuring that the windows are in good structural condition and aesthetic appearance. Work required by this project will first consists of removing the rotted and compromised sections of the window sashes, doors, frames, sills, thresholds, and structural framing. Once rotted sections are removed replacing the sections in-kind using approved preservation methods of repair (dutchman’s, component replacement, composite wood fillers). Then glazing all the window sashes, scraping, and painting doors and sashes to match existing colors.
Contractor will be required to construct temporary window and door closures to prevent trespassing visitors and animals from getting into the Watson Store while doors and windows are being worked on. Windows do not need to function, but doors will need to be repaired so that they can be opened if needed. All windows and doors will be painted and finished to match current color and sheen.
