About this file

This is a Statement of Work for hazard tree pruning services at Capitol Reef National Park's Fruita Historic District located at 16 S Scenic Dr, Torrey, Utah 84775.

The contractor must perform tree maintenance work on 44 identified hazardous trees, including full removal of 10 trees (6 requiring stump grinding), deadwood removal from 34 trees, and structural pruning on 10 of those 34 trees. Additionally, the contractor must remove 39 existing stumps throughout the district, bringing the total number of stumps to be ground to 45. All stumps must be ground to a minimum of six inches below ground level, and resulting holes filled with weed-free topsoil, lightly compacted, and reseeded. The contractor must remove all deadwood greater than 3 inches in diameter back to living junctions per industry standard arborist practices. Work includes debris cleanup, hauling off-site of all limbs, trunks, and chip piles, and hand-raking vehicle tracks to restore areas to previous condition. Reseeding must use Utah Premium Lawn Mix applied at 1 pound Pure Live Seed per 250 square feet, with seeds raked in and covered with a ½-inch layer of certified noxious weed-free straw mulch. The contractor must provide initial watering immediately after reseeding using water from park facilities. All equipment, tools, materials, safety equipment, signage, barricades, flagging, and PPE must be supplied by the contractor. The work must be completed no later than three weeks after the agreed-upon start date. Twenty-one trees are adjacent to structures that cannot be damaged, and nine trees are adjacent to roadways or campsites that may require temporary closures requiring coordination with park representatives.

Fruita District Hazard Tree Pruning

This project will take place at Capitol Reef National Park, 16 S Scenic Dr, Torrey, Utah 84775 within the Fruita Historic District.

The work for this project was determined by park staff based on on-the-ground observations. A total of Forty-four (44) trees were identified as potentially hazardous and in need of tree work detailed below.

Of the Forty-four (44) identified trees, 10 need full removal with 6 of these 10 also including stump grinding, 34 need deadwood removed, and 10 of these 34 also need structural pruning to improve tree structure and health. Twenty-One (21) are adjacent to structures (houses, sheds, fences, etc.) which cannot be damaged or altered, 9 are adjacent to roadways or campsites and may require temporary road/campsite closure/flagging (but will not require a UDOT road permit).

The identified trees will be pruned of all dead and dying sections, including live limbs that are potential hazards to visitors, employees, structures, and vehicles. All deadwood greater than 3” diameter will be removed back to a living junction, according to industry standard arborist practices.

In addition, Thirty-nine (39) existing stumps throughout the district will be removed by stump grinder, with resulting holes filled in and reseeded to restore lawn in these areas. In total including removed trees and preexisting stumps, 45 stumps will be removed.

• The work will consist of the operations detailed above, debris cleanup, stump grinding and hauling off site of all limbs, trunks, cut up tree sections and any and all chip piles as applicable. The surrounding areas of all work will be cleaned and clear of all and any debris. Vehicle tracks will be removed by hand raking to restore area to previous condition and appearance prior to the performed work.

• At the locations of tree removal, it is required that the stumps will be ground to a minimum of six inches below ground level. Following grinding, holes will be filled in with weed-free topsoil to soil grade, lightly compacted, and reseeded with the turf mix listed above.

• For all stumps to be ground, it is required that the stumps will be ground to a minimum of six inches below ground level. Following grinding, holes will be filled in with weed-free topsoil to soil grade, lightly compacted, and reseeded with the turf mix listed above.

• Reseeding will be done using the following seed mix, applied by hand or hand operated spreader at a rate of 1lb Pure Live Seed (PLS) per 250 sq ft. If this mix cannot be sourced, a similar mix may be used but must approved in writing in advance by park representatives. Seed will be raked in after spreading, and a ½ inch layer of straw mulch applied over top. Mulch must be certified noxious weed free and label submitted for approval prior to purchase. Mulch application rate must meet ½ inch depth across reseeded areas. Contractor will conduct initial watering immediately after reseeding, and can fill water from the park boneyard, water plant, or orchard irrigation valves in coordination with park representatives. Park staff will then conduct further post-seeding irrigation and maintenance of seeded areas.
