About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification attachment for M4 Trainer Weapons under federal contract F2MTBG6198A001, issued by 502 CONS/PKBB at JBSA Lackland, Texas.
The M4 Trainer Weapon is a non-weapon training device exclusively designed for Air Force Basic Military Training (BMT) weapon-handling instruction, used throughout dormitories and the 7.5-week training period. The device must support takedown, cleaning, handling, and familiarization tasks without risks associated with functional firearms and cannot chamber, fire, or be converted to a live weapon. The trainer replicates the external form factor of an M4-style duty weapon while incorporating permanent internal design features ensuring ATF-exempt, non-convertible status requiring no special storage instructions.
Key design requirements include: an internal upper receiver with no chamber, barrel structure, or rifling, plus permanent obstruction preventing ammunition insertion; a bolt assembly incompatible with functional firearm components; and a lower receiver with a purpose-built non-gun trigger and trigger pivot pin designed to prevent conversion. Technical safeguards must prevent conversion through manufacturing tolerances below operational standards, structural geometries incompatible with firearm components, material removal paths that destroy structural integrity, and incompatibility with firearm barrels and fire-control systems. Physical specifications require approximately 6.5 lbs weight, 14.5-inch barrel length, 29.75 inches overall length (stock closed) or 33 inches (stock extended), one standard 30-round metal magazine, black MIL-SPEC furniture, and a standard 1-inch nylon sling with minimum two metal/plastic buckles. The trainer must disassemble into ten major components—upper receiver, lower receiver, charging handle, bolt, bolt carrier, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, cam pin, buffer, and action spring—consistent with standard M4 familiarization training, with the trigger secured by an anti-walk pin to ensure durability and structural integrity.
