PART 3 – EXECUTION

3 .1 DRILLING APPROACH

1. Air rotary, mud rotary, auger, or other drilling techniques will be used to advance a borehole to a total depth 20 feet deeper than the encountered ground water elevation.

2. Drill cuttings will be collected in a manner that dust and rock fragments are mitigated, and that representative cuttings can be retained for geologic logging. Cutting samples shall be taken at 5-foot intervals and formation changes.

3. Temperature in the borehole will be measured at 10-foot increments. If increasing temperatures are noted, temperature measurements will be taken at 5-foot increments.

4. All tools, drilling equipment, pipe, etc. shall be pre-washed and free of contaminants before arriving to each drill site.

5. The borehole will be initially drilled at a diameter to permit placement of permanent or temporary surface casing, maintaining at least 4 inches of annular space for grouting or other well drilling operations, the surface casing depth shall be sufficient until stable ground conditions are encountered to allow for borehole drilling.

6. Drill a minimum 8 inch borehole to permit installation of a 3-inch PVC casing or screen from ground surface to total depth, maintaining at least 4 inches of space beyond the casing bell ends or coupling (2-inch annulus).

7. The borehole will remain vertical and plumb to total depth such that a well can be constructed with casing, and centralizers, free hanging in the borehole and maintaining a consistent annular diameter.

12/1/2023 13200-26

8. Foaming agent additions are permitted to assist in lifting drill cuttings to the surface from depth if pre-approved. A de-foaming agent and/or cyclone bubble-reduction device will be necessary at the surface to reduce the amount of surface impact due to foam return.

3 .2 WELL CASING

1. Casing joints shall be solvent welded or mechanically joined (PVC) threaded and couple, with sections at least 10 feet in length.

2. Borehole centralizers shall be welded, or mechanically attached, at 20 feet intervals.

3. The well casing will extend to 18-24 inches above ground elevation.

3 .3 WELL SCREEN AND FILTER PACK

1. The well will require 10 feet of screen across one interval.

2. Borehole centralizers shall be welded, or mechanically attached, to the top and bottom of the well screen and at 20 feet intervals.

3. A sand filter pack will be installed from total depth of the borehole to height indicated on plans.

4. Clean, washed silica sand be installed via tremie pipe, or float method, to eliminate the potential for bridging.

3 .4 WELL SEAL

1. Surface Formation Seal:

a. Well shall be constructed with a surface seal. The seal shall consist of cement grout placed in one continuous application from the bottom of the zone to be grouted to the surface. Curing additives, such as calcium chloride, shall not exceed ten percent of the total volume of grout. Bentonite as an additive shall not exceed five percent of the total volume. Any annular space between the outer casing and an inner casing shall be completely sealed to prevent contamination of the well.

b. A retainer, packer or plug shall be provided to prevent grout from entering the well.

2. Grouting:

a. Temporary Casing Installed

1) Grout shall be placed to completely fill the annular space between the temporary casing or open borehole and the permanent casing. The temporary casing shall be slowly removed allowing the grout to fill the area between the wall of the well and the casing.

2) Grout shall be placed in accordance with the Manual of Water Well Practices for Continuous Grouting. The tremie pipe method shall be used.

3) Grout shall be added as needed to fill the entire void between the borehole and casing. The Contractor may choose not to install temporary casing for installation of the grout seal. However, the Contractor shall ensure that the entire void can be grouted.

b. Temporary Casing Not Installed

1) Grout material shall be placed by a positive displacement method such as pumping or forced injection by air pressure after water or other drilling fluid has been circulated in the annular space sufficient to clear obstructions. Grout shall be injected in the annular space between the inner casing and either the outer casing or the borehole. The grout pipe shall extend from the surface to the bottom of the zone to be grouted.

2) The grout pipe shall have a minimum I.D. of 1" for cement grout. Grout shall be placed in one continuous operation from bottom to top. The grout pipe may be slowly raised as the grout is placed but the discharge end of the grout pipe must be submerged in grout at all times until grouting is completed. The grout pipe shall be full, to the surface, at all times until the completion of the

12/1/2023 13200-27 grouting. In the event of interruption in the grouting operations, the bottom of the pipe should be raised above the grout level and should not be resubmerged until all air and water have been displaced and the pipe flushed clean with clear water. During placement of the grout the permanent casing shall be vibrated or turned to assist grout settlement.

3. Curing: No drilling or other work shall be permitted in the drill hole within 48 hours after placing grout when Type I Portland Cement is used.

4.

3 .5 WELL DEVELOPMENT

1. At the completion of construction, the well must be developed to develop the filter pack, remove fine-grained sediments from near the well screen, remove any drilling fluids, and remove material that may have accumulated in the well.

2. The method of well development shall be jetting or over pumping, or other method approved by the Contracting Officer. The method, however, shall be consistent with National Ground Water Association’s “Manual of Water Well Construction Practices”.

3. Development shall continue until the well produces clear, sediment-free water.

3 .6 WELL ACCEPTANCE

A. For acceptance, verify the well alignment by passing a 1.5 inch x 36 inch bailer through the entire length of the well. If the bailer does not pass freely through, the well shall not be accepted.

B. Unacceptable wells shall be repaired or replaced. If repairs are unsuccessful, the old well shall be abandoned.

3 .7 WELL ABANDONMENT

A. Abandoned or disapproved monitor wells that will not be utilized for their intended use shall be plugged per Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Water Quality Rules and Regulations, Chapter 26, Section 11.

3 .8 RECORDS

1. After completion of all work required by this section, the Contractor shall submit a well drilling report, and drilling log to the NPS.
