2 Systems Description
2.1 Pressurisation according to BS EN 12101-6: 2005
PDS 511
The purpose of a pressurisation system is to protect the pressurised areas from smoke ingress in case of fire by keeping the pressure higher than in the room where the fire occurs and by ensuring a positive air flow into the fire room if the connecting door is opened.
BS EN 12101-6:2005 sets the requirements for pressurisation of stair cores within the United Kingdom. 5 classes of system are detailed within the standard:
- Class A Buildings with a ‘defend in place’ strategy (typically residential).
- Class B Protection of fire fighting shafts.
- Class C Means of escape through simultaneous evacuation.
- Class D Buildings where occupants may be sleeping, e.g. hotels and hostels.
- Class E Means of escape through phased evacuation.
The three systems that are provided for this building are a combination of Class B & Class C. The spaces to be pressurised as part of the Class B system are Stair 3, the Fire Fighting Lift Lobby & the Fire Fighting Lift. The spaces to be pressurised as part of the Class C systems are Stair 1 and Stair 2.
With all doors closed the system is intended to provide a pressure differential relative to the main corridor of 50Pa in the stairs, 50Pa in the fire fighting lift and 45Pa in the fire fighting lobby. A tolerance of ± 5Pa is permitted.
With selected doors open, the system is intended to maintain an air velocity through the door between the stairs and main corridor of at least 0.75m/s (2.0m/s for Class B).
With selected doors open the Class C systems are also intended to provide a pressure differential of 10Pa in the stairs.
A means of air release from the main corridor is required. This is to maintain the open door conditions to ensure that the main corridor does not become pressurised if the door is held open for any length of time. This is achieved by means of a mechanical extract shaft, serving each floor adjacent to Lift 4.
There are some areas within the building where accommodation air release cannot be achieved due to the layout of the building. However, the effect of this is minimal as there are 3 protected stairs within the building, all of which can be accessed from every floor. In the unlikely event that one stair were to fail due to the lack of accommodation air release, alternative escape routes will be available via the two remaining stairs. Although this is a deviation from the guidance given in BS EN 12101-6: 2005, it does not pose a significant risk to the safety of the building and its occupants.
The system comprises:
A number of duty & standby pressurisation supply fan systems.
Duty & standby termination ventilators with in duct smoke detectors for each pressurisation fan system.
A duty & standby mechanical extract fan system.
A duct system with separate risers for each stair, fire fighting lift and fire fighting lobby.
Supply grilles to the stairs at every third floor.
Supply grilles to the fire fighting lobby at every floor.
Supply grilles to the fire fighting lift at the top only.
Colt Doorman ventilator to the main corridor at every floor.
A 1.0 m2 aerodynamic free area smoke ventilator complete with pressure relief vent at the top of each stair.
Pressure differential sensors and inverter fan control for the mechanical extract fan system.
Fan control panels.
OPV control system.
Specification 230906 - Page 3 of 63
2.2 Description of Operations
The system is initiated on receipt of a fire alarm signal from the fire detection system by others.
On receipt of a signal the system will:
Open the Colt Doorman ventilator on the level where the fire alarm has been triggered.
Open all duty termination ventilators.
Start the duty pressurisation supply fans & duty mechanical extract fan.
Duty fan operation will be monitored electronic current monitoring. On detection of duty fan failure, the duty fan will shut down and the standby fan will run.
If smoke is detected at any of the duty termination ventilators, that ventilator will close and the corresponding standby ventilator will open.
If smoke is the subsequently detected at the standby ventilator, the ventilator will close and the system will shut down.
The system prevents over pressurising the stair by using a pressure relief damper which opens automatically when the pressure exceeds 50Pa.
The system will continue to run in this state until:
The fire alarm signal is cleared and the system is reset.
The system is manually overridden using the fire fighters controls at the OPV display panels.
2.3 Shaft Details
The shaft/riser passing through the building must be smooth internally, well sealed, have a cross sectional area of at least 0.6m2 and an aspect ratio of no more than 2:1. Maximum permissible leakage for the shaft is 3.8m3/hr/m2 at 50Pa. Failure to meet this performance could result in a shortfall in the smoke extract volume flow rate.
2.4 Pressurisation fan and duct sizing
Colt systems are sized to meet the requirements of the individual building core. The size and configuration of the core and the choice of pressurisation class dictate the air flow rate and the duct size and configuration dictate the overall resistance of the system.
Fans are selected to match the highest air flow rate required under the doors closed, doors open (velocity) and doors open (10Pa) conditions appropriate to the pressurisation class.
A standby fan is normally provided in series with the duty fan. Allowance for the freewheeling pressure loss from the standby fan is added to the system pressure losses.
The design fan duty is given in the fan data table.
Note:
Any fan selection made prior to final drawing approval is provisional only and may be subject to change.

4.6 Differential Pressure Input/Output unit (DPIO)
PDS: 304-1
The Colt DPIO is an individually addressable relay/IO combined with a differential pressure transmitter, which forms part of the Colt OPV control system. Once signalled by the OPV panel, via the Apollo network, the unit will switch to actuate the controlled equipment. Typically one CSIO is supplied per piece of equipment to allow individual and accurate control of the smoke ventilation scheme.
The Colt Differential Pressure Transmitter is used for measuring differential pressure, positive pressure and vacuum. Its normal use within the Colt control scheme is to measure pressure differences between the stair and lobby on a Colt Shaft Variable system. The transmitter is to be located out of the fire zone (typically within the stair or electrical riser) and will signal the Colt fan control panel to adjust the speed of the fans extracting from the adjacent lobby (via an inverter), preventing over depressurisation.
The entire unit is mounted inside an ABS enclosure to protect it from the risks of mechanical damage, unauthorised modification or interference and exposure to moisture, dust and foreign bodies.
Materials
The enclosure is made from ABS plastic coloured Grey.
Technical data
Dimensions: 380mm(W) x 300mm(H) x 95mm(D).

4.7 Duct Smoke Detector
PDS: 353-1
The duct smoke detector detects smoke and issues an alarm. It is used within the Colt pressurisation control system to detect smoke inline with the supply fans, e.g. within the inlet duct, and deactivate that inlet path. Induct smoke detectors are connected to the Colt MCC panel. Each smoke detector is individually wired to the MCC. When activated, the MCC is aware of its location and has the ability to shut the respective inlet to prevent smoke from entering the system.
The Colt Apollo® duct detector is designed to be used with a conventional detector head. It is fitted to the side, top or bottom of the duct and has two tubes which extend into the airflow through holes in the duct wall. The perforated sampling tube which spans the duct is placed in the airflow upstream of the exhaust tube which causes a pressure differential in the duct detector. Air is sucked up the sampling tube, across the detector and exhausted back into the duct.
The Colt Apollo® optical smoke detector has a printed circuit board within the case, which on one side has a light proof labyrinth chamber with integral gauze surrounding the optical measuring system and on the other the signal processing and communications electronics.

4.12 Seefire
PDS: 001-1
The Seefire is a louvred natural ventilator, available with a wide range of sizes, louvre options and control options. Suitable for many industrial, commercial and residential buildings where day-to-day ventilation and/or a smoke ventilation system is required. For day to day ventilation a rain detection system can be added to close the louvres automatically during precipitation. There is also an option of a fusible link. In case of fire the link will melt at a pre-selected temperature (68oC to 182oC) and permit the ventilator to open or close automatically. Installation angle of 0o to 90o. The option of polycarbonate or glass louvres permits daylight entry. Available in mill finish or polyester powder coated to a standard Colt RAL colour.
Materials
Principal components are manufactured from corrosion resistant aluminium alloy grade 3005 in accordance with EN573-3, with stainless steel fixings.
The use of polypropylene pile weather seal on aluminium louvres, or EPDM rubber flipper weather seal on polycarbonate and glass louvres, reduces the loss of warm air when the louvres are closed.
Louvre Types / U Values
Single skin aluminium louvre, with or without pile weather seals / 5.42W/m²K Double skin aluminium louvre, with or without pile weather seals / 3.49W/m²K Double skin polycarbonate louvre (clear or opaque), with rubber weather seals / 3.2W/m²K Glass louvre (wired, toughened or toughened and laminated) with rubber weather seals /
