About this file

This document is a Project Supplement to Statement of Work for the Culver Gulch Road Open Mine Shaft Closure project located on USFS Road 7316-511, approximately 38 miles north of Cle Elum via US Highway 97 in Section 2, T22N R17E. The primary objective is to safely close an open mine shaft located within the road shoulder to eliminate hazards posed by potential falls from vehicles and foot traffic. The shaft is currently wood cribbed at the surface entry with additional wood and metal materials partially covering the opening. The required work involves closing the shaft to ground surface with an estimated cover dimension of 15 feet by 15 feet (225 square feet). All existing cribbing, fencing, and inorganic material must be removed and properly disposed of.

Access to the site is difficult and steep, requiring navigation via UTV or small 4x4 high-clearance vehicle on USFS road. A 20K track hoe excavator can navigate the USFS road to reach the work site. Equipment staging and mobilization areas are available at the old Blewett town site on both the east and west sides of Highway 97 for unloading trailers and vehicles. The document includes four dated photographs showing the current shaft conditions from multiple angles taken in May 2026, as well as location maps at various scales depicting the mine shaft position relative to surrounding forest features, creeks, and regional geography.

Culver Gulch Shaft Closure 1

Project Supplement to Statement of Work Project: Culver Gulch Road – Open Mine Shaft Closure

Location: NWSW Section 2, T22N R17E USFS Road 7316-511 Approximately 38 miles north of Cle Elum via US Highway 97

Project Summary:

There is an open mine shaft within the shoulder of USFS Road 7316-511 that is a safety issue for any vehicle travel. The shaft is wood cribbed at surface entry with additional wood and metal materials partially covering the opening. The work that needs to be performed is to safely close the shaft to the ground surface to eliminate potential falls into the shaft by vehicles and or foot traffic. We estimate the shaft cover will need to be 15 feet by 15 feet (225 sq. ft) in dimension.

Access to the site is difficult and steep, and it is advised to access via a UTV or small 4x4 high clearance passenger vehicle on the USFS road. A 20K track hoe excavator could navigate the USFS road to the work site. There is room at the base of the road at the old Blewett town site on the east and west side of Highway 97 to unload stage equipment trailers and other vehicles.
