About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics specification document for a high-performance quantum scalar magnetometer that was approved and made active on June 16, 2026, by the Technical Procurement Committee (Version 1.0).

The procurement requires commercially available, optically pumped quantum scalar magnetometers utilizing atomic vapor cell technology (rubidium or potassium) for ultra-precise magnetic field measurements. Core technical specifications mandate sensitivity better than 1 pT/√Hz in scalar measurement mode, frequency response from DC to at least 500 Hz, and integrated low-power laser excitation using VCSEL technology. The sensor head must meet strict Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) constraints: maximum dimensions of 20 mm × 20 mm × 40 mm, weight not exceeding 19 grams, and a modular Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with real-time digital signal processing capability (FPGA) to separate the sensor head from heavier processing electronics. Operationally, the equipment must support synchronized multi-sensor array operation with GPS/GNSS time-syncing, require no precise angular alignment with Earth's magnetic field due to scalar measurement capability, and be robust for deployment in remote and field-research environments. Additional requirements specify the equipment must be a Commercially Available Off-The-Shelf (COTS) item, comply with Buy American Act requirements for domestic end products as applicable to the procurement threshold, and include standard commercial warranty coverage for sensors and associated electronic control units.

Version: 1.0

Table of Contents Table of Contents

1. General Description

2. Core Technical Specifications

3. Physical & SWaP Requirements

4. Operational Capabilities

5. Additional Requirements

1. General Description The requirement is for commercially available, high-performance, optically pumped quantum scalar magnetometers designed for ultra-precise magnetic field measurements. The sensors must utilize atomic vapor cell technology and operate in a scalar mode to detect absolute magnetic anomalies regardless of sensor orientation. This equipment is intended to support advanced research and experiential learning in real-world applications of quantum science.

2. Core Technical Specifications The quantum scalar magnetometer must meet or exceed the following core technical specifications:

Parameter Specification

Operating Principle Optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) utilizing an atomic vapor cell (e.g., Rubidium or Potassium).

Measurement Mode Scalar measurement mode (must respond to the absolute magnitude of the magnetic field, rather than just vector components).

Sensitivity Must achieve a sensitivity better than 1 pT/√Hz (sub-picotesla range).

Bandwidth Must support a frequency response/bandwidth from DC up to at least 500 Hz.

Optical Source Must utilize an integrated, low-power laser excitation source (e.g., VCSEL technology).

3. Physical & SWaP Requirements To facilitate integration on highly constrained platforms, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV/UAS), the system must adhere to strict Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) limits:

Parameter Requirement

Dimensions Sensor head must be highly compact, not exceeding approximately 20 mm × 20 mm × 40 mm.

Weight Sensor head must be ultra-lightweight, weighing no more than 19 grams.

Parameter Requirement

Modularity Must feature a separated or modular Electronic Control Unit (ECU) capable of real-time digital signal processing (e.g., via FPGA) to keep the sensor head decoupled from heavier processing electronics.

4. Operational Capabilities

• Synchronization: Must be capable of synchronized operation within a multi-sensor array (e.g., precise time-syncing via GPS/GNSS).

• Orientation (Heading Error): Because it is a scalar sensor, it must not require precise angular alignment with the Earth’s magnetic field to operate effectively, minimizing dead zones.

• Deployment: Must be robust enough for deployment in complex, remote, or field-research environments.

5. Additional Requirements

• Commercial Availability: The equipment must be a Commercially Available Off-The-Shelf (COTS) item, readily available in the commercial marketplace.

• Compliance: The equipment must comply with the Buy American Act (BAA) requirements for domestic end products as applicable to the procurement threshold.

• Warranty: The vendor must provide the standard commercial warranty for the sensors and associated electronic control units.
