DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Choctaw Lake Spillway Repairs Tombigbee National Forest

This project will repair a washout in the bank along the right side of Choctaw Lake Dam’s concrete spillway that resulted from heavy operating flow from a 8 inch plus storm event. Repairs will also be made to the PVC siphon system pipes on the spillway crest section, the gabion mattress at the exit invert of the spillway, and more heavier gradation rock riprap will be placed below the gabions.

Repairs of the scoured side of the spillway on the right will begin with cutting away any loose black honeycomb confinement material where the subgrade aggregate rock is no longer confined. A 3’ x 3’ x 75’ long channel adjacent to the exposed aggregate subgrade shall be filled in with #57 limestone aggregate. This area may need to be filled in some to establish a dimensioned channel adjacent to the subgrade. Geotextile shall be placed on the 3’x3’x75’ section surfaces below, to the right and above looking downstream to prevent the fines of excavation and backfill material from entering the aggregate. The channel shall exit alongside the gabion area at the spillway exit invert. Borrow excavation shall be hauled in to fill in the scoured area naturally sloping back up to undisturbed existing top bank. Class 5 rock riprap placed on geotextile shall be placed at the surface adjacent to the concrete spillway wall extending 25’ up the slope. At the end of project, turf establishment seeding and strawing shall be performed along disturbed surfaces along the fringes above the rock riprap.

The gabion and revetment mattress shall be pushed back against the invert of the concrete spillway exit.

Class 5 rock riprap shall be placed adjacent to and to the same elevation as the revetment mattress level to a minimum of 10’ downstream before sloping down and filling in more scoured rock further downstream. Some displaced rock shall be pushed back into the scour hole or downstream to re‐ establish a flow path within the rock.

The PVC siphoning system has become separated and displaced on both 12” pipes due to either slipping or cracking at the coupling. Cut as necessary and replace with new sections and sealed coupling connections. If the coupling connection has an access, it must be restored the same as existing.

Applicable specifications may be found in FHWA’s FP‐14 and the attached supplemental specifications.
