About this file
This is a Military Specification (MIL-Z-21353) for powdered zirconium hydride intended for use in military pyrotechnics, issued by the Naval Air Engineering Center on June 9, 1959, superseding NAVORD OS 8583 from March 25, 1958.
The specification covers one grade and one class of zirconium hydride with detailed chemical and physical requirements. Chemical requirements specify zirconium plus hafnium at a minimum of 95.5 percent and hydrogen between 1.85 and 2.10 percent. Physical requirements mandate an average particle diameter of less than 10 microns, measured according to MIL-STD-707. Quality assurance provisions require suppliers to conduct all inspection and testing prior to government submission, with testing records maintained and available to the government. Lots are defined as material produced by one manufacturer within 24 consecutive hours under consistent conditions, or as individual batches in batch operations. Sampling requires a representative 1/4 pound specimen from each of five representative containers per lot, with chemical analysis (zirconium-hafnium content and hydrogen determination) and physical testing (average particle diameter determination) performed on each specimen. Acceptance criteria require all samples within a lot to meet both chemical and physical requirements; failure of any sample results in lot rejection. Contractors may request reanalysis at no government expense if a lot is rejected, with the option to resubmit after removing defective portions.
Packaging and preservation requirements specify Level A, B, and C options, with Level A requiring 25-pound hermetically sealed drums (Type 37A or 37B) in accordance with PPP-D-760, packed four drums per overseas wood box or domestic wood box per PPP-B-601 or PPP-B-621. All containers must be marked "CAUTION: REACTS EXPLOSIVELY WITH WATER" and comply with MIL-STD-129 marking requirements and Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR 71-78 for dangerous goods transportation.
