About this file

This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for the 321 STS ISU 90I (P/N 56000) storage container to be supplied and delivered to RAF Mildenhall, UK. The specification defines technical, physical, and functional requirements for a heavy-duty, tactical, intermodal cargo container matching the form, fit, and function of the AAR Mobility Systems ISU® 90I container. The unit must support secure internal airlift, external helicopter sling loading, and direct integration with standard military ground transport vehicles without supplementary tie-down chains or cargo pallets.

Physical specifications require exterior dimensions of 108 inches wide (±0.5") × 88 inches long (±0.5") × 91.35 inches high (±0.5"), with usable interior volume of 385 to 400 cubic feet. The container must have a tare weight not exceeding 1,720 lbs, a minimum payload capacity of 10,000 lbs, and support a fully loaded gross weight of at least 11,720 lbs. Construction must feature heavy-duty, impact-resistant aluminum exterior skin creating a weatherproof, dustproof, and sandproof barrier, with an integrated extruded aluminum 463L-compatible pallet base mechanically fastened to prevent delamination. The unit must be structurally reinforced to allow safe two-high stacking when empty or fully loaded.

Transportability requirements mandate compliance with MIL-HDBK-1791 structural restraint standards for chain-free aircraft restraint into USAF fixed-wing aircraft Cargo Loading Systems, dedicated lift points for helicopter sling loading, a 4-way forklift-loadable base, and seamless integration with FMTV, LMTV, HEMTT, Flatracks, and CROP systems. Operational features include an internal personnel walkthrough aisleway, a 4-door access configuration with two doors on each 108-inch face (one wide ~45" and one narrow ~39"), heavy-duty winching rings at all four lower corners, retractable exterior folding steps for roof access, pre-drilled aluminum base for mobility wheel kits, and interior tie-down rings with zinc plating for corrosion protection. The electrical system requires 120/240 VAC single-phase 60 amp 60 Hz power input, internal circuit breaker system, surge protection, two 30" fluorescent light fixtures, two interior duplex outlets, and a dehumidification system. The container includes pre-installed gun racks: four M4 6-gun racks (24 total), three M9 10-gun racks (30 total), one M240 3-gun rack, one M249 4-gun rack, one MK19 4-gun rack, and two M2 1-gun racks. Certification by Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) or equivalent military aviation authority for flight safety and internal/external transport is required.

321 STS – ISU 90I

Salient Characteristics Background:

1. Scope

1.1. This document specifies the salient characteristics required for the 321 STS ISU 90I (P/N 56000)

Storage Container to be supplied and delivered to RAF Mildenhall, UK.

1.2. This document defines the technical, physical, and functional requirements for the procurement of a heavy-duty, tactical, intermodal cargo container, specifically matching the form, fit, and function of the AAR Mobility Systems ISU® 90I (P/N 56000) container. The unit must support secure internal airlift, external helicopter sling loading, and direct integration with standard military ground transport vehicles without the use of supplementary tie-down chains or cargo pallets.

2. Characteristics

2.1. Physical and Dimensional Requirements

2.1.1. Exterior Dimensions: Must measure exactly 108 inches Wide (±0.5”) × 88 inches Long (±0.5”) × 91.35 inches High (±0.5”).

2.1.2. Usable Interior Volume: Must provide a minimum capacity of 385 cubic feet up to 400 cubic feet.

2.1.3. Tare Weight: Must not exceed a baseline empty weight of 1,720 lbs.

2.1.4. Payload Capacity: Must be structurally certified to hold a minimum cargo payload of 10,000 lbs.

2.1.5. Maximum Gross Weight: Must support a fully loaded operational gross weight of at least 11,720 lbs.

2.2. Material, Structural, and Environmental Performance

2.2.1. Shell Construction: Must feature a heavy-duty, impact-resistant aluminum exterior skin that creates a completely weatherproof, dustproof, and sandproof barrier to protect contents in extreme tactical environments.

2.2.2. Base Construction: Must utilize an integrated, extruded aluminum 463L-compatible pallet base that is mechanically fastened to prevent delamination and engineered to protect aircraft cargo roller conveyor systems.

2.2.3. Stacking Capacity: Must be structurally reinforced to allow safe multi-tier stacking up to two-high when empty or when fully loaded to the maximum gross weight of 11,720 lbs.

2.3. Transportability and Logistics Integration

2.3.1. Chain-Free Aircraft Restraint: Must comply with MIL-HDBK-1791 structural restraint requirements, locking directly into USAF fixed-wing aircraft Cargo Loading Systems (CLS) without requiring tie-down straps or chains.

2.3.2. Helicopter Transport: Must feature dedicated, structurally rated lift points to facilitate external helicopter sling loading.

2.3.3. Ground Handling: Must incorporate a 4-way forklift-loadable base to allow safe, multi-directional transport by materials handling equipment (MHE).

2.3.4. Tactical Vehicle Compatibility: Must seamlessly integrate with the flatbed cargo beds and loading systems of standard military vehicles, including FMTV, LMTV, HEMTT, Flatracks, and Container Roll-In/Out Platforms (CROP).

2.4. Accessibility and Operational Features

2.4.1. Internal Aisleway Configuration: Must incorporate an internal personnel walkthrough aisleway to allow flight crews or operators to safely move through the container during flight operations when loaded inside an aircraft cargo bay.

2.4.2. Access Doors: Must feature a 4-door access configuration consisting of two doors mounted on each 108-inch exterior face. Each side must include one wide (~45”) and one narrow (~39”) high-clearance door to accommodate large equipment cases.

2.4.3. Winching and Rigging: Integrated, heavy-duty winching rings must be fixed to all four lower exterior corners to aid in field winching and dragging maneuvers.

2.4.4. Maintenance and Roof Access: Must include built-in, retractable folding steps on the exterior wall to allow personnel to safely access the roof structure without external ladders.

2.4.5. Mobility Prep: The aluminum base must be pre-drilled to support the immediate installation of low-speed/high-speed mobility wheel kits or standard heavy-duty caster assemblies.

2.4.6. Interior Tie Downs: Rings secured items to floor, zinc plate for corrosion protection

2.5. Quality Assurance and Standards Compliance

2.5.1. Airlift Certification: The unit must be certified for flight safety and internal/external transport by the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) or equivalent military aviation authority.

2.5.2. Standardization: Must meet or exceed relevant military standards for intermodal cargo containers utilized in specialized field deployments (e.g., WRSK, mobile workshops, armories, and communication nodes).
