3. Specific Requirements

This section provides the design specification requirements for the VHSM to include mix bowls and any peripheral equipment.

a. Mixer Type: The mixer shall be the vertical mixer style consisting of two blades set for dual planetary mix motion with one “slow” blade and one

“fast” blade.

b. Volumetric Capacity: With the bowl in the mixing position the mixer shall have at minimum a nominal working capacity of 150 U.S. gallons (568

Liters). The “nominal working capacity” shall be defined as “up to 1 inch below the top surface of the mixing blades when the mixer blades are immersed.

The drive components and internal gearing of the mixer shall be rated for the maximum torque required to mix materials with such a viscosity at the maximum fast blade speed.

d. Stand/Structure: The support structure shall be rigid and sturdy enough to adequately support the drive system, bowl lift mechanism, and mixer housings.

e. Drive System: Mixer motor shall be inverter duty rated for a 460 Volt, 60 Hertz, 3 phase power supply and controlled via a variable frequency drive

(VFD).

f. Housings: Any portion of the housing that will come into contact with materials being mixed should comply with section 2.f. Housing shall be designed to operate under full vacuum while mixing. Housing shall contain access ports for maintenance and inspection.

g. Housing Process Ports: Mixer housing shall contain ports for process feed connections, pressure relief connections, vacuum connections, and camera monitoring connections. All ports shall be pipe flange connections sized appropriately for the port. Minimum port sizes and numbers shall be as listed below:

j. Blade Clearances: Blade clearances between each other and mixing bowl wall and bottom shall NOT be less than one quarter (0.250) inches.

k. Bowl Lift System: The mixer shall be equipped with a system for raising and lowering the bowl from the mix position. This system shall be self-aligning to ensure the mix bowl correctly and accurately engages with the mixer housing. It shall be designed in such a way that excessive tilting and misalignment does not occur during abnormal operation such as a loss of electric or hydraulic power.

l. Auxiliary Power Sources: If power sources other than electric (i.e., hydraulic, pneumatic) are required for operation of the mixer, the power unit for said source shall be provided with the mixer. It shall be sized appropriately for the operational requirements and meet all necessary classifications and safety standards.

m. Machine Finishes: The interior surfaces that make contact with the materials being mixed shall be polished to a 0.60μm (23 micro-inch) or better finish.

Weld areas and casting surfaces are subjected to a dye penetrant inspection to assure that they are free from crevices, cracks or other harmful imperfections. Exterior machined surfaces shall be 3.2 μm RMS (125 μin RMS) or better. All exterior non-machined surfaces constructed of stainless steel are glass-beaded to a 2A finish. After meeting all inspection requirements, exterior surfaces constructed of carbon steel shall be coated/painted to prevent corrosion.

n.
