About this file
This document is a technical specification and site inventory for the South Dakota Forest Wide R2 Rocky Mountain Region Black Hills National Forest Forestwide Well Decommissioning project. The document provides detailed information on 17 water wells located across all districts of the Black Hills National Forest that require decommissioning and closure.
The wells vary significantly in construction type, depth, and diameter. Steel casing wells range from 4 feet to 80 feet in depth with diameters of 6 to 8 inches, while hand-dug wells range from 8.67 feet to 48 feet in depth with diameters of 3 to 9 feet. One concrete cistern is also included. Specific site constraints and work requirements are documented for each well, including seasonal work windows (October 1 to April 30 for most hand-dug wells), environmental protections for wetlands and perennial drainages, heritage documentation requirements, and restricted access routes. Notable requirements include removal and transport of existing bat gates at the Rifle Pit Well and Mystic Trail #6611 Well to the Black Hills National Forest Equipment Depot in Hill City, protection of stone well collars at Spokane Townsite wells, and coordination with Forest Service Heritage staff for access route flagging and documentation. Wells must be closed when ground is dry or frozen, with specific instructions for filling methods, material protection, and environmental impact avoidance. The document includes location maps, GPS coordinates, aerial and ground-level photographs, and access directions for each of the 17 wells.
