UNIQUE EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION AND ACRONYMS
PART 1. GENERAL
1.01 OVERVIEW
A. This convention identifies mechanical and plumbing equipment naming sequences, including acronyms, for the identification of equipment in the Lockout Tagout instructions.
PART 2. MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT NAMING CONVENTION
1.02 GENERAL
A. The first set of characters are the Building Code. This is 1 - 4 digits and precedes the first dash in the sequence.
Unique Identification in Bold
2 0 0 - X X X X - X X - X X X X
Building Designator
B. Following the Building Designator, Equipment Designator and Sequence Designator are dashes which serve as a placeholders.
Unique Identification in Bold
X X X - X X X X - X X - X X X X
Placeholders
C. The second set of characters is the Equipment Designator Code. This is an acronym for the equipment being named and labeled. This does not represent any equipment upstream, or downstream, from the equipment. This code must comply with the Equipment Acronym List.
For example, a Hot Water Pump for an Air Handler will be labeled HWP, and not AHU.

D. The third set of characters is the Sequential Equipment Number. This is a unique sequential NUMBER ONLY. This number set should not have any letters or equipment designation.
Unique Identification in Bold
X X X - X X X X - 3 - X X X X
Sequential Equipment Numbers
E. The fourth and final set of characters are the Service Identifiers. This identification can be the area served by the equipment (ie. 200-AHU-7-OR) or the upstream equipment served (ie. 200-
CHWP-3-CHLR1.
The Service Identifier does not make up the Unique Identification. It is a description which identifies the service of the equipment for personnel use only.
Unique Identification in Bold
X X X - X X X X - X X - I C U
Service Identifiers
F. Examples of a Unique ID for a chilled water pump in Building 200.
1. Unique ID without a Service Identifier:
Chilled Water Pump = CHWP
Example: 200-CHWP-3
2. Example of the same Unique ID for a chilled water pump in Building 200 with a Service Identifier.
Chilled Water Pump = CHWP
Example: 200-CHWP-3-CHLR1
G. Special Note regarding Unique ID with Service Identifier: The Service Identifier does not factor into the Unique ID designation.
1. Two similar pieces of equipment cannot have the same Sequence Number within a building, even if they have different or unique Service Identifiers.
2. Example of correct Unique ID for two chilled water pumps in Building 200 with a Service Identifier.
Example 1: 200-CHWP-3-CHLR1
Example 2: 200-CHWP-9-CHLR3

UNIQUE EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION AND ACRONYMS
In these examples, the sequence number for the CHWP is unique. There is only one CHWP 3 and one CHWP 9. The sequence does not reset, or start at one (1), for a chiller’s pump. This avoids any conflict with the numbering.
3. Example of incorrect Unique ID for two chilled water pumps in Building 200 with a Service Identifier.
Example 1: 200-CHWP-3-CHLR1
Example 2: 200-CHWP-3-CHLR3 (Example is highlighted as an INCORRECT exhibit)
In these examples, the sequence number for the second CHWP is not unique. This error in labelling may result in the lockout or maintenance of the wrong pump.
