About this file
This document is a technical specification for constructing an all-metal fence, supplementing an interagency fence document from February 1999. The specifications provide detailed requirements for fence construction, including H-braces, T-posts, inline metal posts, and wire spacing. H-braces should use 7' to 8' posts set 3' deep with 46" above ground, using 2 7/8" diameter metal pipe uprights and optional welding or clamping. T-posts are to be heavy-duty, installed every 16' with a minimum length of 5 1/2', and inline metal posts will be used every 10th t-post or 160' using 2 3/8" or 2 7/8" diameter pipe. Wire spacing specifications include both three-wire (18"-28"-42") and four-wire (18"-24"-30"-42") configurations, with the top wire being barbed and the bottom wire smooth, following guidelines from the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Department's Landowners Guide to Wildlife Friendly Fences.
