SECTION 011000 - SUMMARY

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY OF WORK

A. Project: Rapid River Complex Warehouse B Re-roofing

1. Address: 8181 US Hwy 2, Rapid River, MI 49878 B. Purpose of work:

1. Re-Roofing Warehouse B located at the Rapid River Ranger District Complex.

C. Description of Work

1. The principal features of the work to be performed under these specifications includes:

a. Bid includes the removal and replacement of the existing roof coverings at the Rapid River Complex Warehouse B including roof shingles, underlayment, flashing, drip edge, and three (3) vent pipe boots. The Contractor shall provide 2 rows of Ice & Water Shield on all valleys and eaves, new shingle vent at the ridges, new metal drip edge at eves, new vent pipe boot flashing, and new CertainTeed Landmark shingles (Heather Blend color). The Contractor shall include all dump fees for disposal of all debris. The Contractor shall provide all supervision, labor, equipment, materials, and miscellaneous materials and supplies (staples, nails, roof cement, starter shingles, cap shingles, etc.) for a complete weather tight project.

2. Photos: See attached photos for existing conditions.

D. The Contractor shall be responsible for measurement of existing office building to determine all materials needed to complete construction.

E. Performance schedule: Contract time shall be 150 calendar days (5 months) including roofing materials submittals and roofing materials delivery time. Notice to proceed and suspend/resume work orders will be issued as required to allow time to order materials. The Contractor shall be required to start work and/or order roofing materials within 10 days of the effective date on the Notice to Proceed and shall provide a minimum of 72 hours advance notice to the CO prior to beginning work. The Contractor shall prepare and submit proposed progress schedule within 5 days of the effective date on the Notice to Proceed.

F. Measurement and Payment: Lump Sum Quantities (LSQ) – These quantities denote one complete unit of work as required by or described in the contract; including materials, equipment, labor, and incidentals necessary to complete the job. They will not be measured; progress payments can be processed based upon the completed percentage of the LSQ.

G. Workmanship: The CO shall be the sole judge of workmanship; the CO will use standard construction standards and practices as a basis for judgements. All work shall be completed per the material manufacturers warranty instructions.

H. Protection of personnel and property: The Contractor shall provide temporary barricades, dust partitions, and other forms of protection as required to protect public and FS personnel from injury due to construction activities. The Contractor shall be responsible for repairing or replacing FS property that is damaged by construction activities in a manner acceptable to the CO.

1.2 WORK RESTRICTIONS

A. Contractor's Use of Premises: During construction, Contractor will have full use of building site area as indicated. Contractor's use of premises is limited only by Owner's right to perform work or employ other contractors on same site.

Subparagraph below contains an example of limitations on Contractor's use of premises; delete if not applicable. Insert other descriptions of areas or types of limited use, requirements for cooperation with Owner's personnel, noninterference with Owner's or public use, and other necessary restrictions if required.

1. Owner will occupy premises during construction. Perform construction only during normal working hours (8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday thru Friday, other than holidays), unless otherwise agreed to in writing by the Contracting Officer (CO). Clean up work areas and return to a useable condition at the end of each work period.

2. Driveways, Walkways, and Entrances: Keep driveways and entrances serving premises clear and available to Owner, Owner's employees, and emergency vehicles at all times. Do not use these areas for parking or storage of materials.

3. All waste materials to be removed and disposed of from the entire roof area must be removed in a way to avoid entry door areas to protect the public and FS personnel from injury.

4. Nonsmoking Building: Smoking is not permitted within the building or within 25 feet of entrances, operable windows, or outdoor-air intakes.

SECTION 013000 - SUBMITTALS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1

REQUIREMENTS

A.

It will be the Contractor’s responsibility to submit all items with promptness as to cause no delay in the work. Approvals must be obtained before starting work involving the item. Contractor shall allow ten (10) calendar days for processing of submittals by the Government.

B.

The following submittals are required following award of contract for review and/or approval pursuant to contract provisions.

1. The Contractor shall prepare and submit proposed progress schedule within 5 days of the effective date on the Notice to Proceed.

1.2

MANUFACTURER’S LITERATURE AND SHOP DRAWINGS

A.

Submit one (1) copy of product data on the items required herein to the COR for approval. Literature which is not marked or otherwise designated to show the exact model, size, etc. which the Contractor proposes to use, will be returned by the COR “without action.” Circle or check items on submittals. Highlighter pens may print black or not at all when copied.

B.

Information must be adequate to determine compliance with specifications.

C.

Submit three (3) copies of materials that cannot reasonably be copied on typical copy machines.

D.

One (1) copy of all submittals will be returned to the Contractor.

E.

Submittals which are received from sources other than through the Contractor’s office will be returned by the COR “without action.”

SECTION 015000 - TEMPORARY FACILITIES AND CONTROLS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1

SECTION REQUIREMENTS

"(Water) (and) (Electric Power)" Paragraph below assume services are available and Owner will permit tapping into existing system without charge.

A.

Water and Electric Power: Available from Owner's existing system without metering and without payment of use charges. Provide connections and extensions of services as required for construction operations.

"Erosion- and Sedimentation-Control Plan" Paragraph below is based on requirements for LEED-NC Prerequisite SS-1 and assumes that Contract Documents do not include erosion- and sedimentation-control Drawings.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1

TEMPORARY FACILITIES

A.

Provide field offices, storage and fabrication sheds, and other support facilities as necessary for construction operations. Store combustible materials apart from building.

2.2

EQUIPMENT

A.

Fire Extinguishers: Portable, UL rated; with class and extinguishing agent as required by locations and classes of fire exposures.

Revise "HVAC Equipment" Paragraph below to suit Project. Liquid-propane-gas or fuel-oil heaters are commonly used. Steam or hot-water heaters, gas-fired space heaters, or electric unit heaters are also used.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1

TEMPORARY UTILITY INSTALLATION

A.

Sanitary Facilities: Provide temporary toilets, wash facilities, and drinking-water fixtures. Comply with regulations and health codes for type, number, location, operation, and maintenance of fixtures and facilities.

1. Disposable Supplies: Provide toilet tissue, paper towels, paper cups, and similar disposable materials for each facility. Maintain adequate supply. Provide covered waste containers for disposal of used material.

2. Toilets: Install self-contained toilet units at location approved by COR. Shield toilets to ensure privacy.

3.2

SUPPORT FACILITIES INSTALLATION

A.

Waste Disposal Facilities: Provide waste-collection containers in sizes adequate to handle waste from construction operations. Comply with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

Retain paragraph below if use of existing elevators will be permitted.

3.4

OPERATION, TERMINATION, AND REMOVAL

A.

Remove each temporary facility when need for its service has ended, when it has been replaced by authorized use of a permanent facility, or no later than Substantial Completion.

B.

At Substantial Completion, repair, renovate, and clean permanent facilities used during construction period.

SECTION 024119 - SELECTIVE DEMOLITION

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1

SECTION REQUIREMENTS

Retain, revise, or delete first paragraph below to suit Project. Insert other limitations if necessary, such as when adjacent floors will be occupied.

A.

Owner will occupy portions of building immediately adjacent to selective demolition area. Conduct selective demolition so Owner's operations will not be disrupted.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1

PEFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A.

Regulatory Requirements: Comply with EPA regulations and with hauling and disposal regulations of authorities having jurisdiction.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1

DEMOLITION

A.

Maintain services/systems indicated to remain and protect them against damage during selective demolition operations. Before proceeding with demolition, provide temporary services/systems that bypass area of selective demolition and that maintain continuity of services/systems to other parts of the building.

B.

Provide temporary barricades and other protection required to prevent injury to people and damage to adjacent buildings and facilities to remain.

Retain "Refrigerant" Paragraph below if selective demolition includes mechanical equipment containing refrigerant. Refrigerant may be part of equipment such as air-conditioning units, chillers, refrigerators, freezers, icemakers, heat pumps, dehumidifiers, and drinking water coolers.

C.

Protect walls, adjacent roof surfaces and other existing finish work that are to remain.

D.

Neatly cut openings and holes plumb, square, and true to dimensions required. Use cutting methods least likely to damage construction to remain or adjoining construction.

E.

Remove demolition waste materials from Project site and legally dispose of them.

F.

Clean adjacent structures and improvements of dust, dirt, and debris caused by selective demolition operations. Return adjacent areas to condition existing before selective demolition operations began.

SECTION 073113 - ASPHALT SHINGLES

PART 4 - GENERAL

4.1 SECTION REQUIREMENTS

A. Submittals: Product Data and Samples:

a. Shingle style and color choices

b. Flashing and trim color choices

c. Ridge vents style and color

d. All submittals must be approved by COR prior to purchase of materials

B. Identify each bundle of shingles with appropriate markings of UL or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

1. Exterior Fire-Test Exposure: ASTM E 108 or UL 790, Class A.

2. Wind-Resistance-Test Characteristics: ASTM D 3161 or UL 997 passed.

C. Warranties: Provide standard manufacturer's written warranty, signed by manufacturer agreeing to promptly repair or replace asphalt shingles that fail in materials within 30 years from date of Substantial Completion, prorated, with first 5 years non prorated.

PART 5 - PRODUCTS`

5.1 ASPHALT FIBERGLASS SHINGLES

A. CertainTeed Landmark or approved equal: UL Certification of ASTM D3462; Conforms to ASTM D3018 Type I - Self-Sealing; ASTM D3161-03b, Class “F” Wind Resistance (Regional) ; ASTM D3161-99a Wind Resistance; UL997 Wind Resistance; UL 2390/ASTM D6381 Class “H” and ASTM D7158 Class “H” Wind Resistance; UL 790 Class A Fire Resistance; glass fiber mat base, ceramically colored/UV resistant mineral surface granules across entire face of shingle; two-piece laminated shingle; or approve equal.

1. Weight: 227 pounds per square (100 square feet)

2. Color: Heather Blend

3. Wind Resistance: 110 mph

4. Algae Resistance: 10 years

5. Warranty: Limited Lifetime

5.2 ACCESSORIES

A. Underlayment: CertainTeed Roof Runner or approved equal.

B. Self-Adhering Sheet Underlayment: CertainTeed Winter Guard or approved equal, on all valleys and eaves.

C. Asphalt Roofing Cement: RF140 or approved equal.

D. Roofing Nails: Grip Rite 1-1/4” Smooth Galvanized Coil Roofing Nails or approved equal.

E. Flashing and Trim:

1. Drip Edge: Formed sheet metal with at least a 2-inch roof deck flange and a 1-1/2-inch fascia flange with a 3/8-inch drip at lower edge, color = Brown

2. Vent Pipe Flashing: IPS Roof Flashing or approved equal.

PART 6 - EXECUTION

6.1 INSTALLATION

A. Contractor will remove sections of existing roof material and cover to protect each working day. Protect stripped sections from elements, tear off only what can be completed in one day or tarp roof sections left exposed.

B. Shrubbery and improvements adjacent to the building shall be protected during contractors operations, staying within Owner’s property limits.

C. Material removed from the roof shall be legally disposed of by the contractor. At the completion of work the contractor will perform a final site cleanup.

D. Contractor shall provide the COR copies of all landfill load receipts.

E. Contractor shall inform the COR of any areas needing repair as they are uncovered.

F. Apply self-adhering sheet underlayment at eaves and rakes from edges of roof to at least 36 inchs inside exterior wall line. Two rows of self-adhering sheet underlayment will be installed on the roof eves.

G. Apply self-adhering sheet underlayment at valleys, extending 18 inches on each side, with 12” overlap in valley.

H. Construct woven and closed-cut valleys following manufacturer’s recommendations. No fastener should be within 6” of the valley’s centerline, the first course will extend at least 12” onto adjoining roof, and each cut shingle will be embedded in a 3” strip of plastic cement.

I. Chimneys, vents, and protrusions shall be flashed with new flashing.

J. Shingles will be attached to flashing with plastic cement.

K. Install first and remaining courses of asphalt shingles stair-stepping diagonally across roof deck with manufacturer's recommended offset pattern at succeeding courses, maintaining uniform exposure.

L. Shingle courses shall be laid straight and checked with chalk lines during construction.

M. Use recommended number of fasteners per shingle and place fasteners according to the shingle manufacturer’s specifications.

N. Existing ridge vents shall be removed and disposed of properly and replaced with new ridge vents per specifications
