About this file
This is a design pre-production document set for interpretive graphics to be installed at National Park Service locations, specifically for Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska.
The document contains specifications for four graphic installations designed by Nan Hildebrandt at Split Rock Studios (vendor 3087 TOK APLIC). K.1.a is an Alpine Reading Rail measuring 48"w x 15"h that presents information about alpine zone ecology and species adaptation in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. K.2.a is an Alpine Photomural measuring 156"w x 103"h displaying a large-scale alpine landscape photograph. K.1.b-c consists of a Yukon Charlie Topic Panel (30"w x 50"h) paired with a Yukon Charlie Photomural (103"w x 91.5"h) covering the Yukon and Charley Rivers National Preserve, including information about wildlife, archaeological sites, historic structures, and recreational opportunities. K.3.d-g comprises Yukon Charlie Peep Hole Graphics with multiple layered viewing components in 12"x12" dimensions for front, middle, and back positions, plus two smaller graphics (Foraging 10"x5" and Salmon 10"x7") that reveal detailed images through cutouts. All graphics are drawn to 100% scale at 12"=12" and were created with design dates of 09.22.23, 12.18.23, and 02.15.24, with final approval dated 04.11.24. Output and mounting specifications are noted as pending in the document.

Up in the Alpine Life is tough in the mountains of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. This is the alpine zone. At these high altitudes, the air is thin. The cold climate slows decomposition, so soil is shallow—where it exists at all. The short growing season keeps plants small.
But despite the challenges, some species thrive up here. They have adapted to survive alpine risks— and even use them to their advantage.

Wild Rivers, Wild Lands The Yukon and Charley Rivers flow through the rugged region north of here. Spawning salmon, nesting peregrine falcons, and other wildlife thrive along their banks. Riverside cliffs offer dramatic cross-sections of the distant past. Archaeological sites and old mining cabins hint at more recent history.
These two rivers are at the heart of Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve.
It's a wild landscape with a place for people, too. Visitors come to raft down the dramatic rivers. Alaskans hunt, fish, and harvest here, as they have for thousands of years.
Historic structures and long abandoned gold dredges are lasting reminders of this region’s gold rushes and early pioneer history. Slaven’s Roadhouse has been a popular landmark along the Yukon River for nearly a century. Each February, it serves as a checkpoint during the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race.
The Yukon River flows nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 km) before it reaches the Bering Sea. The Preserve stretches along 130 miles (200 km) of that length. Views from the river include spectacular bluffs with dramatic mountains in the distance. Public use cabins offer rustic DIY accommodations along the way.
All 1.1 million acres of the Charley River watershed are within the Preserve. It’s America’s only completely protected Wild & Scenic River watershed. With a variety of rapids, the river offers 108 miles (175 km) of thrilling rafting opportunities.
