About this file

This document is a technical specification appendix for exclusion fencing installation at Switzerland Park. The specification details the materials, installation methods, and quality standards required for constructing a steel post and wire fabric fence designed to exclude access to mine openings. The fence shall be installed per Standard Work Specification 17 and Standard Drawing 8 from the 2009 General Bid Specifications, with modifications outlined herein. Key requirements include 10-foot long steel posts with a minimum outer diameter of 2-3/8 inches, galvanized in accordance with AASHTO M 111, anchored at 10-16 linear feet intervals approximately 10-15 feet from mine openings. Post holes must be a minimum of 1.5 inches wider than the post diameter, with depths of 24 inches in unconsolidated or weathered bedrock, or 18 inches minimum below ground surface where solid bedrock is encountered within one foot of the surface. Posts shall be anchored using Class B foundation concrete from base to ground surface, with all hollow posts filled with concrete.

The fence fabric specifications call for 72-inch high, 12.5-gauge or larger galvanized metal wire fabric with 6-inch by 6-inch maximum spacing, securely attached to posts with 9-gauge wire ties. Corner posts must be cross-braced with 9-gauge wire secured using metal sleeves, with internal angles of 135 degrees or less. All gaps under the fence exceeding 6 inches in any direction shall be closed using pre-approved equivalent materials to achieve consistent 6-inch by 6-inch or less spacing to ground level. The specification permits field-mixed concrete or pre-packaged concrete as alternatives to Class B if pre-approved by the Project Manager. Gates, if required, shall be 6 feet by 3 feet, set between two posts with a maximum 6-inch clearance from ground surface, hinged in three locations, and fitted with two latches including one locking latch. The contractor is responsible for necessary clearing and grubbing to achieve required grade and alignment, and all materials shall be standard commercial grade unless otherwise specified.
