About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and optional installation of a microwave resonant cavity heating system for Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS). The system must utilize a TE111 microwave resonant cavity operating in the 2.4-2.5 GHz frequency band to enable controlled microwave-assisted heating of solid samples during synchrotron X-ray experimentation. The cavity design must accommodate APS beamline apertures and sample-positioning interfaces, include X-ray-transparent windows perpendicular to the sample position, and support bottom access for sample insertion while maintaining free rotation on existing APS sample stages. The system shall incorporate water-cooled cavity plates, a motorized cavity translation system, a Windows-based control computer with Python or LabVIEW control software, low-loss microwave power delivery cabling, a water chiller, and mechanical drawings of the cavity assembly.

The contractor must deliver a complete integrated system including all hardware, control electronics, microwave power equipment, software, instrumentation, and documentation necessary for standalone operation. Key deliverables include approved prefabrication drawings, the complete cavity system free of shipping damage, successful communication verification between all major components, and demonstration of controlled heating with synchronized data acquisition. Argonne National Laboratory retains ownership of all government-furnished equipment and shall own any custom software or experimental procedures developed by Argonne personnel. The related RFQ (Solicitation Number 6-B185-Q-00279-00) issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science requires responses by 5:00 PM CST on May 26, 2026, with evaluation based on lowest price for technically acceptable proposals. Responses must include signed page 1, completed page 2 with anticipated ship date and country of origin, and firm fixed-pricing in US Dollars for all line items.

5/20/2026 Appendix “B” Argonne National Laboratory Statement of Work Microwave Resonant Cavity System Compatible with Advanced Photon Source Beamlines Background Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks to acquire a microwave-assisted heating system for in-situ X-ray experimentation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The system shall utilize a TE111 microwave resonant cavity operating in the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency band to control the heating of solid samples during synchrotron X-ray interrogation.

The system will serve as a research platform enabling controlled microwave-material interaction studies under APS beamline conditions. The cavity geometry, beamline apertures, and sample-positioning interfaces shall be compatible with APS experimental configurations for high-energy diffraction and tomography, as well as rotating sample-stage assemblies. The system shall include sight access with X-ray-transparent windows positioned perpendicular to the sample position, and bottom access for sample insertion while maintaining free rotation of the sample connected to the existing APS beamline stage.

The system shall support programmable temperature profiles, closed-loop PID control, synchronized data acquisition, and integration with APS beamline experiments. The resonant cavity system is intended for research use and shall provide user-accessible control interfaces and data logging capabilities suitable for experimental development and analysis.

This contract covers the design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and optional installation support of a fully integrated microwave resonant cavity heating system for operation at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source.

The vendor shall provide all hardware, control electronics, microwave power delivery equipment, software, instrumentation, documentation, and support necessary for standalone operation of the microwave heating system.

The base system shall include:

Scope microwave resonant cavity with APS beamline access ports and provisions for X-ray-transparent windows Windows-based control computer with installed python or LabVIEW-based control software Manual translation mechanism for positioning the cavity over the sample holder Objectives Water-cooled cavity plate and associated cooling provisions Motorized cavity translation system X-ray transparent cavity windows Tasks Water chiller for microwave generator and/or cavity cooling The primary objective of this procurement is to obtain flexible and research-capable microwave heating chamber components suitable for in-situ APS experimentation.

The system shall:

Provide controlled microwave heating of solid samples during synchrotron X-ray interrogation Operate in the TE111 resonant mode within the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency rang Allow alignment of the cavity heating region with the APS beam path Support integration with APS sample stages and beamline infrastructure

Design and deliver a TE111 microwave resonant cavity system suitable for APS beamline operation.

Provide low-loss microwave power delivery cabling between the generator and the resonant cavity.

Provide a resonant cavity including:

Beamline access ports aligned with APS X-ray beam path Ports or provisions for optional X-ray windows Water-cooled cavity components as required Manual vertical translation mechanism relative to the sample holder Additional viewport(s) for sample observation Provide a Windows-based computer with installed control software.

Motorized cavity translation system X-ray window installation Mechanical drawings of the cavity assembly
