About this file
This file is an appendix containing a Statement of Work (SOW) for the procurement of a microwave generator and process control unit (PCU). The Department of Energy Office of Science is seeking to source a microwave generator, infrared pyrometer control unit, and associated enclosure-related hardware through RFQ solicitation number 6-B185-Q-00277-00, which is evaluated based on lowest price technically acceptable methodology. The proposal response deadline is 5:00 PM CST on May 26, 2026, and all submissions must include firm fixed-pricing in US Dollars with anticipated ship dates and country of origin information clearly specified.
Contractors must complete all three required submission components or risk disqualification: signature on page 1 of the solicitation package, completion of all information on page 2 including anticipated ship date and country of origin, and best and final pricing on individual line item boxes on page 2. This RFQ relates to Notice ID 6-B185-Q-00279-00 but must be responded to separately due to different funding sources. Inquiries should be directed to the Contracting Officer.

5/20/2026 Appendix “B” Argonne National Laboratory Statement of Work Microwave Resonant Cavity System Compatible with Advanced Photon Source Beamlines Background Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks to acquire a microwave-assisted heating system for in-situ X-ray experimentation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The system shall utilize a TE111 microwave resonant cavity operating in the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency band to control the heating of solid samples during synchrotron X-ray interrogation.
The system will serve as a research platform enabling controlled microwave-material interaction studies under APS beamline conditions. The cavity geometry, beamline apertures, and sample-positioning interfaces shall be compatible with APS experimental configurations for high-energy diffraction and tomography, as well as rotating sample-stage assemblies. The system shall include sight access with X-ray-transparent windows positioned perpendicular to the sample position, and bottom access for sample insertion while maintaining free rotation of the sample connected to the existing APS beamline stage.
The system shall support programmable temperature profiles, closed-loop PID control, synchronized data acquisition, and integration with APS beamline experiments. The resonant cavity system is intended for research use and shall provide user-accessible control interfaces and data logging capabilities suitable for experimental development and analysis.
This contract covers the design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and optional installation support of a fully integrated microwave resonant cavity heating system for operation at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source.
The vendor shall provide all hardware, control electronics, microwave power delivery equipment, software, instrumentation, documentation, and support necessary for standalone operation of the microwave heating system.
The base system shall include:
450 W, 2.45 GHz solid-state microwave generator (SAIREM GMS450 or equivalent) Scope Closed-loop process control system with PID routines and programmable heating profiles Windows-based control computer with installed python or LabVIEW-based control software Water chiller for microwave generator and/or cavity cooling Objectives Operate in the TE111 resonant mode within the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency rang Support both manual microwave power control and automatic PID temperature control Provide a 450 W, 2.45 GHz solid-state microwave generator with:
Tasks Frequency sweep and tuning capability between 2400 and 2500 MHz Frequency adjustment resolution of approximately 100 kHz Modbus RTU remote communication capability via RS232, RS485, Ethernet, or equivalent Analog input capability for external PID power control Provide low-loss microwave power delivery cabling between the generator and the resonant cavity.
Provide a process control unit supporting:
Closed-loop PID temperature control Frequency sweep and autotuning functionality Real-time monitoring of microwave generator status, forward power, reflected power, and temperature Provide a Windows-based computer with installed control software.
Provide Python, LabVIEW-based or equivalent control software capable of:
Microwave generator control and monitoring Temperature PID control Recipe-based process control Generator operation and reflected power protection documentation
1. Receipt and approval of prefabrication drawings and design documentation incorporating the specifications identified in this Statement of Work.
2. Receipt of the complete microwave resonant cavity system and associated components without shipping damage.
3. Verification that all major system components identified in the approved design documentation are included.
4. Verification of successful communication between the microwave generator, temperature instrumentation, process control system, and user interface software.
5. Demonstration of:
Frequency sweep and reflected power minimization capability
