About this file

This appendix document provides comprehensive lake information for the City of Long Beach, Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, in support of RFP PR18-113 for Lake Water Quality Management services. The city operates nine park lakes requiring water quality management: Coyote Lake (4.8 surface acres), Alamo Lake (20.1 surface acres), North Lake (7.9 surface acres), Horseshoe Lake (2.75 surface acres), Nature Center North Lake (2.8 surface acres), Nature Center South Lake (2.8 surface acres), South Duck Pond (3.6 surface acres), Heartwell Lake (1.4 surface acres), and Scherer Lake (0.5 surface acres). The lakes vary significantly in depth, volume, lining type, and shoreline configuration. Lining types include clay liners, natural mud bottoms, HDPE liners, and PVC with concrete overlay. All lakes support recreational and aesthetic uses, with most supporting fishing activities and wildlife habitat for fish, waterfowl, turtles, and frogs.

Water quality management is critical across all nine lakes, as every lake exhibits algae presence, predominantly planktonic and filamentous harmful algal blooms (HABs). Current conditions include variable turbidity levels, water clarity ranging from good to very poor, and brown or green coloration in several lakes. Most lakes require sedimentation management with 3-5 feet of accumulated sediment, though South Duck Pond reports no sedimentation. Water supply sources include wells and potable water, with some lakes featuring recirculation systems and aeration equipment. Circulation and treatment equipment varies from none installed to recently upgraded systems with nanobubble aeration, diffusers, and alum injection systems. The lakes support dense aquatic plant growth including cattails, bulrushes, sago pondweed, and trees, with nearby terrestrial vegetation including palms, pines, and grasses that contribute to water quality challenges.
