OSHA ergonomics for contractors focuses on preventing injuries through proper body posture, especially when lifting, kneeling, or using tools. Key strategies include using mechanical aids for heavy lifting, keeping tools within the "power zone" (near the torso), and minimizing repetitive motions. Proper posture guidelines involve keeping the back straight, lifting with the legs, using knee pads when kneeling, and selecting tools that reduce stress on the hands and wrists.

Lifting and materials handling

• Lift loads under 50 pounds:

o Get help for loads of 35–40 pounds or larger, awkward objects, and avoid lifting anything over 50 pounds.

• Keep the load close:

o When lifting, keep the load close to your body with your back straight and lift using your legs, not your back.

• Use mechanical aids:

o Use carts, dollies, or mechanical equipment to move materials to avoid manual carrying.

• Store materials wisely:

o Store materials to minimize lifting from the ground or above shoulder height.

Tools and workstations

• Keep tools within the "power zone":

o Adjust the work height to keep hands between shoulder and elbow level whenever possible.

Use tool extensions for overhead work.

• Avoid awkward postures:

o Avoid bending the wrist, twisting the torso, or reaching to the side while lifting.

• Use proper tools:

o Select tools with handles that fit the hand and use vibration-damping tools when possible.

• Use knee pads:

o When kneeling is unavoidable, use knee pads or anti-fatigue mats.
