AL-1803-2752 A Statement of work: SAXS Flight Tube for 12.3.1 Endstation
6. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this technical specification is to provide information needed by the subcontractor to complete the design, manufacture, and testing of a new SAXS Flight Tube (SFT) to be installed within the existing beamline 12.3.1 experimental hutch. The FT will be approximately 4m in length and 1m diameter; however the actual dimensions shall be proposed by the subcontractor based on optimal use of the available space. It is intended to house a Dectris 6M vacuum compatible detector and to translate it along the X, Y and Z directions within vacuum. The detector itself is outside the scope of supply.
The FT will be installed within an existing endstation hutch which cannot be disassembled or modified for access. Therefore, it is essential that all components are able to pass through the existing entryway. Motion of the FT will be required for initial alignment and for occasional realignment to a new optical axis if the upstream KB mirrors are retracted.

Samples will be mounted on a SAXS sample environment cart directly in front of the FT. There shall be a gate valve near the sample end of the vacuum tube that will allow the vacuum tube to interface with small portable sample vacuum chambers. It shall also have a vacuum-interlock system to close the gate valve in the event of leaks and appropriate protection against over pressurization such as a pressure relief valve and burst disk.
The FT shall include additional motions for beamstops and a detector cover. The detector cover shall protect the entire detector face from damage, and it shall be movable in and out of the beam.
The scope of supply shall include the FT chamber components, support structure, internal mechanics and the actuator drives. Motor controllers, cabling, and motion controls shall be listed as an optional package, as detailed in the SOW.
Vacuum hardware including roughing pump, low vibration sustaining pump, gauges, vacuum controllers etc. shall also be detailed as an optional package.
The seismically certified floor mounting assembly is outside of the subcontractor’s scope of supply. However, the subcontractor shall supply sufficient information concerning mass and mass distributions to enable LBNL staff to design an appropriate seismic restraint system.
7. REQUIREMENTS DEFINITION
Shall, should, may, and will are used to define every requirement listed in this document. The definitions of these terms are as follows:
- Shall is a requirement that must be implemented
- Should indicates a desire and can be interpreted as ‘best effort’
- May indicates a desire and can be interpreted as ‘nice to have’
- Will is used to inform intent or declaration of purpose and is not a requirement
8. COORDINATE SYSTEM (CSYS)
The following CSYS will be used in this document:
The beamline CSYS, oriented such that the Z-axis is in the direction of the beam propagation from the source, and the Y-axis is normal to the floor, positive upwards. The positive X direction is outboard of the storage ring. X, Y, Z are designated transverse, vertical, and ci al ly R el ea se d to th e

longitudinal. Starting from the beamline CSYS, a sequence of three intrinsic rotations, RX, RY, RZ, also designated pitch, yaw and roll.
9. SPECIFICATIONS
9.1. Spatial envelope and limitations
The new SAXS flight tube will be installed within the existing 12.3.1 beamline endstation hutch
(Figure 1). The inner longitudinal dimension of the hutch is 6.695m along the beam axis. The space-claim for the FT begins 2.35m downstream from the inner face of the upstream wall leaving
<4.346m available for the tube. However, note that the upstream and downstream hutch walls are not parallel (Figure 2). A CAD model of the hutch and beam geometry can be provided upon request. Space and access on the outboard side is limited; note that the outboard hutch wall is not parallel to the beam axis. Clearances between the beam and hutch wall are covered in more detail in section 9.2.
Under normal operation all access to the tube and its contents shall occur on the inboard side. If access to the downstream end is required (or foreseen) by the subcontractor than the subcontractor shall leave sufficient space between the downstream end of the FT and the hutch wall to facilitate such access. The length of the flight tube should make best use of the available longitudinal space to maximize the available range of travel for the detector. The final dimensions of the FT spatial claim shall be confirmed in writing by LBNL at the time of the PDR.
The existing structure of the hutch cannot be disassembled or modified in any way to facilitate transportation, assembly, installation, or access, to the flight tube or any of its components; with the exception of labyrinth removal which is permissible for cable and utilities pulling (subject to compliance with ALS radiation shielding modification procedures). All access to the work site is via the existing hutch door (Figure 1). The inner dimensions of this door are 2032x1219mm (HxW).
The subcontractor shall design the assembly such that all components and equipment necessary to install and commission the FT can pass through this door.
Requirement
Primary access to the FT and its contents shall be via the inboard side
If access to the downstream end of the tube is required or envisioned, then sufficient space should remain between the tube and hutch wall to facilitate such access
All components and necessary equipment shall be able to pass through the existing entryway ci al ly R el ea se d to th e

9.2. Beam geometry and alignment of the FT to the beam
The primary beam axis is parallel to the floor at a height of 1240mm above the floor. However, to allow sufficient space for seismic anchoring between the FT support structure and the floor the subcontractor’s scope of supply shall end 75mm above the floor level. See section 10.3 for seismic anchoring requirements. The support structure of the FT shall include XYZ adjustments suitable for aligning the FT to the beam axis with sufficient accuracy to meet the alignment specifications described in section 9.5.
A KB mirror pair is positioned upstream of the FT to provide variable beam focusing. It is envisioned that these mirrors will be individually retractable. This KB-retracted beam path will be for occasional use or to accommodate particularly unusual experimental geometries that require a descending beam path. Access to additional intermediate geometries between the “inserted”

and “retracted” geometries is not required. The subcontractor should provide sufficient adjustment in the Y and X directions to permit the flight tube to be realigned to the alternative beam axis by LBNL staff. This will entail a pitch rotation of 9mrad downwards about a point 2m upstream of the start of the flight tube volume claim and/or an inboard yaw rotation of 9mrad about a point 1.5m upstream of the start of the flight tube volume claim.
Realignment between alternative beampaths can be achieved via manual adjustment. Although
LBNL may consider subcontractor proposed motorized solutions as an additional option.

10.2. CAD Integration
The ALS experimental floor is crowded, and integration tends to be difficult and subject to complex spatial constraints. At the time of the FDR the Subcontractor shall supply a CAD model in a mutually agreed format that is suitable for validating the spatial constraints outlined above in 9.1 and 9.2.
Requirement
The final design spatial envelope shall be validated by integration in the beamline CAD model at the time of the FDR
10.3. Seismic requirements
The FT will operate in a geologically active area near the Hayward Fault; therefore, the seismic anchorage design and the equipment support frames shall comply with the California Building
Code.
Due to unique constraints, the seismic floor anchorage design shall be done by LBNL. To this purpose, LBNL will design a floor mounting plate following the floor mounting plate tapped hole layout proposed by the Subcontractor. LBNL incurs all associated costs, however the
Subcontractor shall provide the following parameters and implement all recommendations made by the LBNL Structural Engineer.
Requirements
The Subcontractor shall propose a floor mounting plate tapped hole layout to be reviewed and approved by LBNL
The Subcontractor shall provide the following parameters:
- The weight of the complete FT assembly as configured for operation, including the 6M detector and all necessary cabling and utilities distribution required for normal operation
- The overall height, width, and depth
- The dimensioned location for the center of gravity (height and in plan)
- The magnitude and location of all vacuum loads
The equipment support frames shall comply with the California Building Code
In addition, the Subcontractor shall provide calculations that show that the equipment support frames, including but not limited to the support structure, the vacuum chamber, and the internal mechanics, comply with the California Building Code. The design and calculations shall be reviewed and approved by the LBNL Structural Engineer. Because of the close proximity of the
Hayward Fault, the seismic load requirements specified by the building code for the ALS are high, typically around 0.37 g-force vertically and 1.00 g-force laterally, in any direction. LBNL may assist the Subcontractor in defining the seismic load requirements.

The SAXS flight tube modules shall each have three fiducials visible from the inboard side, in locations to be reviewed and approved by LBNL in writing, each with datum related to the assembled cylindrical chamber axis, for installation at LBNL by LBNL S&A personnel.
Compact posts 29E064 or Heys nest 27K813 fiducial posts, or equivalent, (LBNL reserves the right to determine equivalency), shall be used
10.5. Lifting provisions
Access at the ALS is often restricted, and specialized lifting fixtures or attachment points may be needed. LBNL shall provide all information needed by the Subcontractor (e.g. list of available lifting equipment) to develop a suitable design and procedure by the time of the FDR.
All components shall have lifting provisions as required for assembly/disassembly and packing/transport per ASME B30 standard. They shall be capable of being hoisted by a manual crane with load limit of 1 ton (2000 lbs.) and maximum hook height of 2.67 m. The SAXS flight tube shall have a provision for a balanced lift of all chamber adaptor components when they are connected together.
Requirement
