About this file

This is a Scope of Work document for Brookhaven National Laboratory's procurement of one MEMS-based in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder compatible with existing Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) microscope systems.

The required holder must be compatible with two specific TFS TEMs at BNL: the Titan ETEM and Talos operando S/TEM, and must integrate seamlessly with the laboratory's existing heating control system without requiring any modifications to current infrastructure or systems. Key technical specifications include: double-tilt capability with a beta tilt range of at least ±25°; at least 6 electrical contacts supporting simultaneous heating and electrical biasing; on-chip temperature sensor with closed-loop 4-point probe resistive temperature control; maximum heating temperature of 1300°C; specimen drift not exceeding 50 nm from room temperature to 600°C; microcalorimetry capability to measure heater power consumption changes during chemical and physical processes under vacuum and controlled gaseous environments; and accurate temperature measurement and control independent of gas composition and pressure. The heater material must be encapsulated with a chemically inert protection layer. The vendor must provide the holder control software under perpetual license without subscription requirements, compatibility with existing MEMS heating chips and consumables, remote installation support and user training, manufacturer's standard warranty and technical support, and any required export control documentation. Equipment acceptance occurs after successful installation, compatibility verification, demonstration of proper operation, and completion of required training.

Subject: Scope of Work for an in-situ heating holder for TFS TEM

P.O. Box 5000 Upton, NY 11973-5000 managed by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) requires the procurement of one MEMS-based in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder for use with existing Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) transmission electron microscopes. The holder will support advanced in situ heating experiments and shall be compatible with the laboratory’s existing microscope systems, heating controller, MEMS heating chips and associated accessories.

1. The vendor shall provide one in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder and associated cables required for operation with the laboratory’s existing heating control system.

The procurement does not include the heating control system.

2. The holder shall be compatible with the two existing Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) TEMs at BNL: Titan ETEM and Talos operando S/TEM.

3. The holder shall be fully compatible with the laboratory’s existing heating control system, including the heating controller, control computer, software, and associated accessories. No replacement or modification of the existing control system or laboratory infrastructure shall be required for operation.

4. The holder control software shall be provided under a perpetual license and shall not require a subscription for operation.

5. The holder shall provide double-tilt capability with a beta tilt range of at least ±25°.

6. The holder shall have at least 6 electrical contacts that supports simultaneous heating and electrical biasing.

7. The holder shall be compatible with the laboratory’s existing MEMS heating chips and associated consumables.

8. The holder shall have an on-chip temperature sensor and closed-loop 4-point probe resistive temperature control.

9. The holder shall provide microcalorimetry capability to measure changes in heater power consumption during chemical and physical processes occurring in the specimen under vacuum and controlled gaseous environments.

10. The holder shall provide accurate temperature measurement and control under vacuum and controlled gaseous environments over the full operating temperature range, independent of gas composition and pressure.

11. The heater material shall be encapsulated with chemically inert protection layer.

12. The holder shall support a maximum heating temperature of 1300˚C.

13. The holder shall provide stable in situ heating performance suitable for atomic-resolution TEM/STEM imaging and analytical experiments. The specimen drift distance from room temperature to 600˚C shall not exceed 50 nm.

14. The vendor shall provide remote installation support and user training covering the operation and new features of the holder.

15. The vendor shall provide the manufacturer’s standard warranty and technical support.

16. Acceptance of the equipment shall occur after successful installation, verification of compatibility with the existing microscope systems, demonstration of proper operation, and completion of the required remote training.

17. The vendor shall comply with all applicable Brookhaven National Laboratory requirements and provide any documentation required for export control, if applicable.
