HAYPRESS TRAIL BRIDGE REPLACEMNT
GENERAL NOTES
The Forest Service has authorization for the use of mechanized equipment in the Wilderness for this project. There is no motorized access from the trailhead to the project site except by helicopter. As part of the contractor’s construction schedule, he shall submit for approval from the CO a list of mechanized equipment and duration of use intended for the project.
There are two staging areas for this project. One is at the Wooley Creek Trailhead off the Salmon River Road (County Road 2B01). The contractor can sign this area as unavailable to the public during active contract usage. The other staging area is at Wooley Camp, which is a private inholding within the wilderness boundary and is approximately ½ mile from the bridge site.
The Forest Service has gotten approval from the land owner at Wooley Camp to use this private inholding area for a staging area. It is the contractor’s responsibility to contact the landowner, notify him of the construction schedule, and work out any details regarding the use of the property. The Forest Service will give the contact information to the successful bidder.
Pay Item 15205 – Bridge Surveying and Staking: The survey shall be conventional on-the-ground survey and mapping techniques. The Government has NOT set any initial reference lines or horizontal and vertical control points. The topographic map shall include at a minimum the topography at the bridge site to include 50 feet for each end of the existing bridge and 10 feet of each side of the centerline of the existing trail, the creek alignment and elevation. Include all relevant detail of the abutments including dimensions of all exposed surfaces and if there are any irregularities or differences in the elevation on the bridge seat. Also include detailed locations and size of anchor bolts, including the projection above the bridge seat, and condition of the bolts.
Utilize the following guidelines for establishing the maps:
1. Establish a minimum of two survey control points for horizontal and vertical control.
2. Establish horizontal and vertical geometric control for structures to the nearest 0.03 feet.
3. Temporary survey points for contours shall be to the nearest 0.1 feet.
4. Prepare the site survey map on a reproducible material that is durable and dimensionally stable. Provide 4 hard copies. Provide electronic map and survey data in AutoCAD version 2010 or earlier. Measurements shall be in U.S. Customary Units.
5. For the topography map use a scale of 1 inch = 10 feet (1:100) and a contour interval of 1 foot.
6. For the abutments drawing include plan, elevation, and section, with a minimum scale of ½”=1’-0”.
7. Identify all relevant features, show true north, and provide a title block with such information as the name of the preparer, survey date, map completion date, forest, district, trail name and number, and bridge name.
Additionally provide digital photos of the abutments with close ups of the anchor bolts. Also include photos of the trail approaches. Photos are included and incidental to the Survey Pay Item.
Pay Item 20102 – Clearing and Grubbing: this work includes the removal of material away from the abutments and truss structure, primarily earthen sluff. It shall not be sidecast into the creek area and shall be hauled away to a disposal site approved by the C.O. It is anticipated that this will be at the closest possible site that is along the trail and provides a stable location and one that has no potential for entering a stream course. This material may also be used for backfill material of the retaining walls. This pay item also includes removal of downed logs along the trail close to the bridge site, downed log removal along the upper trail section that bypasses the Wooley Camp private inholding (trail section is approximately ½ mile long), removal of approved and marked hazard trees, and removal of select trees necessary for helicopter access with Contracting Officer approval.
Pay Item 20304 – Removal of Existing Bridge: is NOT designated for salvage and shall be disposed of off government lands in accordance with all governmental laws and regulations. The existing bridge is painted with lead based paint.
Pay Item 25703 – Alternate Retaining Wall: The retaining walls are intended to be placed next to the existing abutments to prevent sluff and debris from the cross slopes building up on the abutments and truss elements of the bridge. The C.O. will direct the contractor to their location. The following are requirements under this Pay Item:
1. Concrete shall be a standard Portland cement based concrete meeting ASTM C 387 Specifications that acquires a minimum of 3,000 PSI after 28 days, submit type to C.O. for approval prior to ordering. The volume placed shall be adequate to completely fill the void excavated for the steel “H” beam.
2. The steel “H” beam shall not be galvanized, submit specifications to C.O. for approval prior to ordering. Excavated a hole for embedment that is sufficient to surround the steel beam with a minimum of 2 inches of concrete on all sides.
3. The wood boards shall be grade DF #2 or better. The boards shall have the same pressure treatment requirements as the deck planks of the bridge as noted on the bridge plan sheets.
4. Place suitable backfill material behind the retaining walls and compact to prevent settlement. Backfill along the entire length and to within 1 foot of the top of the wood boards.
