Section 306 – Reconditioning of Existing Road

Delete this section in its entirety and add the following:

Description

306.01 Work.

This work consists of manufacturing cushion material on native surface roads with mobile rock processing equipment. The work includes reducing bedrock and oversized rock to a specified size; watering, mixing, compacting, blading and shaping the manufactured cushion material into a smooth, non-segregated road surface as required by the design template.

The work shall consist of cleaning ditches and reconditioning of the traveled way and shoulders of the existing road. Treating the road surface with “road crushing” equipment. The existing road surface shall be ripped and windrowed for road crushing operation by obtaining material from the roadbed and ditches to produce a crushed surfacing for the width of the existing road traveled way, turnouts and shoulders. The post treatment work following use of “road processing” equipment requires the following types of equipment to accomplish the end product:

dozer w/rippers, road grader, mobile road crushing equipment (FAHR Roadcrusher, Forester C-

2000 or equivalent), vibratory steel wheel roller and water truck.

Material shall be obtained from the roadbed and ditches to produce a crushed surfacing for the width of the existing traveled way, turnouts and shoulders. Crushed material shall be uniformly processed, shaped and compacted to provide proper inslope or outslope for road surface drainage.

Construction

306.02 Performance

Clear the work area of vegetation and obstructions prior to excavation of subgrade material.

Scatter shall be done in accordance to 201.05 Method (4).

The traveled way, shoulder and turnouts shall be ripped to a depth necessary to produce a 6-inch minimum depth crushed surface layer at locations SPECIFIED IN THE CONTRACT and

DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND.

The contractor shall clean ditches as shown in the work list and prepare the road surface by ripping and windrowing for road crushing operation by obtaining enough material that is 2 inches or larger from the roadbed and ditch lines to produce a layer of uncompacted crushed material to a minimum depth of 6 inches for the full width of the existing traveled way, shoulders and turnouts.

Mix the aggregate and adjust the moisture content to obtain a uniform mixture near the optimum moisture content. Spread and shape the mixture to obtain a uniform layer to the required cross section. No oversized rock will be allowed within the specified depth of material.

SPS 306–1 (01/28/10)

ARRA FOREST WIDE BMPS

Oversized material may be sidecast outside the traveled way. No material shall be sidecast within 50’ of a live stream.

In limited situations, when shown on the plans, or when approved in writing by the CO, cover segments of roadway with imported material obtained from sources approved by the CO.

Materials to be crushed shall be obtained excavation ditches, roadside berms or from approved sources within the project area. The resulting crushed material will be visually inspected for meeting size requirements free of deleterious and non-mineral materials.

Ensure that the finished traveled way has a uniform grade and smooth surface free of hollows, depressions, and segregation. Do not leave berms or ridges along either shoulder of the roadbed, unless directed by the CO.

306.03 Gradation

The mobile road crusher shall process the windrowed material, up to 16 inch diameter, and reduce the size of the windrowed material to a 2 inch minus gradation.

Oversized material that cannot be accommodated in the mobile crusher shall be removed at the source and shall be disposed of by sidecasting at locations approved by the Contracting Officer.

No material shall be sidecast at locations that will result in material entering a stream channel or result in a safety issue with roadways below work area.

306.04 Thickness and Width Requirements

Crushed material shall be processed on the roadbed to the specified thickness (6-inch uncompacted depth) for the full width of the traveled way and shoulders. Crushed material shall be shaped with a 2% inslope (ditched sections) or 2% outslope (nonditched sections) for proper drainage. Crushed material shall be uniformly moistened or dried to the optimum moisture content for maximum density and compacted to full width by a vibratory steel wheeled roller as specified. Crushed material shall be surface bladed using a motor grader during the compaction operation to remove irregularities and produce a smooth running surface.

306.05 Compaction

Compaction equipment shall be operated over the full width of the traveled way and shoulders until visible deformation of the layer ceases. The vibratory steel-wheel roller shall have a minimum weight of 6 tons. The compactor shall be equipped with amplitude frequency control and specifically designed to compact the material on which it is used. At least three complete passes shall be made.
