DISEASE: Infection rate was averaged across all six (6) units and is approximately 55%.

CONSERVATION STRATEGY: Cultural practices that reduce the development and/or perpetuation of pest problems will be given priority. To restore, and sustain White pine in its native ecosystem in the presence of the non native pathogen, Cronartium ribicola (White pine blister rust), a sound scientific approach is necessary. This effort requires genetic as well as cultural practices. Pruning is being shown to reduce the risk of pathogen infection in young, well established trees

TIMBR – Manage timber lands to sustain diversity while providing long term growth and production of commercially valuable wood products. The original West Moore silvicultural Rx target stand objectives were for even-aged management with a diverse species composition. Species preferences were listed, in order, as follows: PP, WP, DF, WL, GF, C and WH. If pruning activities do not take place, the White Pine could potentially be lost, due to the high rate of blister rust infestation.

NARRATIVE: There are a wide range of stocking densities: (740-2000 trees per acre) with a species composition as follows: White pine 15%, Western larch 15%, Western red cedar –Douglas fir 30% , Grand fir-Western hemlock 30% and 10% - Lodgepole pine/Ponderosa Pine. Heights are 25 to 30 feet tall.

Ribes is in moderate-high amounts throughout. A pre-commercial thinning is scheduled, but is not funded at this time. The next entry is scheduled for a commercial harvest exam.

PRESCRIBED TREATMENT: Prune ALL the healthiest White pine with no bole cankers or branch cankers closer than 6” from the bole, regardless of spacing. White pine that has been girdled by bears to a moderate degree (less than ½ the circumference) shall be pruned. Stub pruning may be considered. The

Silviculture Summary Prescription will address leaving a portion of the branch on the bole to deter Bear girdling. Leave at least a 12” stub, make sure no live needles on are on stub. If blister rust is present on a branch within 12” of the bole, do not prune that tree. Do not prune any tree less than 8 feet tall. Based on the pct and pruning exams, there are varying densities of White Pine ranging from 75-200 trees/acre.

TARGET STAND OBJECTIVES: The silvicultural prescription recommends a fully stocked stand with a species composition of 70% White pine/Western larch/Douglas fir/Western red cedar mix, the remainder being other species. Pruning ALL White pine will help achieve the goal of sustaining a component of the species in the ecosystem. This species is very desirable for their resistance to insects, diseases and wildfires, and desirable for being long-lived species. Maintaining this species on the landscape will help stands trend toward a stand that is more drought and fire resilient, and therefore better adapted to climate change.
