Section 210 - Rehabilitation of Abandoned Roadways
DESCRIPTION
210.01 Rehabilitation of roadways includes but is not limited to restoring stream crossings, Work removing ditch relief culverts, installing water bars, full road re-contour, seeding and mulching disturbed areas. Repair erosion sites to allow access. Restore stream crossings by removing fill and drainage structures and installing gradient control structures. This work includes excavation of stream crossings without drainage structures such as springs, seeps, and headwater swales. Identified work is an estimate and it shall be the responsibility of the contractor to determine actual work for each road to meet specifications outlined in the contract.
CONSTRUCTION
210.02
Begin work at the road terminus and progress towards the permanent road closure.
Performance Work may begin at either end if more than one road junction exists. Where roads are overgrown with brush and small regeneration, equipment shall be operated over brush without grubbing, scarifying or otherwise destroying the established root system of the road way except at designated work sites and to maintain a service road for safe passage. Repair existing mass wasting sites to allow heavy equipment access. All drainage structures/appurtenances shall be removed, dismantled and disposed of in accordance with Section 202.
Vegetation in the existing roadway, windfall and/or concentrations of woody debris, frozen soil, ice and snow shall not be incorporated into the excavated material. It may be placed above the road, on finished slopes or hauled to the designated disposal area. After rehabilitation work is completed scatter large boulders, stumps, dead logs,and/or clearing debris on the finished surface AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.
210.03
Full road re-contour consists of de-compacting the cut slope half of the road
Full Road way to a depth of 30 inches, excavating fill from the fill slope, and embanking on Re-contour the cut slope half of the road way. Contour fill to match the adjacent natural side slopes.
A 200 foot long representative test strip designated by the Contracting Officer shall be de-compacted to determine the adequacy of de-compaction in the upper layer of for each road way within the same width, depth, soil and surface parameters as designated by the Contracting Officer. The Contracting Officer may approve other methods of de-compaction.
SPS 210 - 1 (2/3/09)
SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATION
Brown Grizzly Rehab Close designated roads by fully re-contouring the road AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Re-contour a 200 foot section of road within 0.1 mile of milepost
0.0 with a hill slope greater than or equal to 70 percent, or in a location determined by the Contracting Officer.
210.04
All streams, including springs, seeps and headwater swales shall be restored to Stream Channel natural ground slope. Do not place excavated material against a weeping cut bank, Restoration spring or in ponded water, allow for proper drainage. Prior to restoration, install a sediment basin in the stream where water is present AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. The sediment basin can be eliminated with approval of the Contracting Officer.
Perform stream channel restoration AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Prior to restoration, install a sediment basin in the stream channel where surface water is present AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. The sediment basin can be eliminated with approval of the Contracting Officer. De-compact one half of the roadway nearest the cut slope to a depth of 30” before placing road fill excavated from the stream channel.
Removal of any drainage structures shall be in accordance with Section 202. Adjacent road ways shall be re-contoured to approximate adjacent side slopes. Use logs, rock, or rootwads to install gradient control structures. Trees near the stream channel may be used for gradient control and shall be designated by the Contracting Officer. These trees may require felling or bucking into the proper lengths. Rock can be used for gradient control if conserved from adjacent excavation.
Category I - Typical stream crossing in this category will have a fill length measured from the edge of the road shoulder to the downhill toe of fill of less than 15 feet, may or may not require a drainage structure to be removed, and shall require three gradient control structures to be installed. General difficulty level is low.
Category II - Typical stream crossing in this category will have a fill length measured from the edge of the road shoulder to the downhill toe of fill of greater than 15 feet and less than 25 feet, may or may not require a drainage structure to be removed, and shall require four gradient control structures to be installed. General difficulty level is low to moderate.
Category III - Typical stream crossing in this category will have a fill length measured from the edge of the road shoulder to the downhill toe of fill of greater than 25 feet and less than 40 feet, may or may not require a drainage structure to be removed, and shall require five gradient control structures to be installed. General difficulty level is moderate.

General difficulty level is high.
210.05
Install water bars AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.
Water Bars
210.06
Ditch relief culverts shall consist of the removal of culverts other than those Ditch Relief found at stream crossings. The removal of drainage structures shall be in accordance Culverts with Section 202. The remaining trench shall remain connected to the inside ditch and shall be out sloped to provide drainage.

After stream channel restoration is complete, break & Mulching open grass hay or straw bales and uniformly scatter on slopes of the newly restored stream channel in loose layers no more than 6 inches thick.
210.08
The method of measurement as described in Section 106, will be designated in the SCHEDULE OF ITEMS. Distances are measured along the road way centerline to the nearest 0.1 mile prior to treatment. Drainage structures (culverts) shall be the number of complete structures measured from inlet to outlet.
