6. The seal ring shall be held securely, but not rigidly, in place by a retaining flange bolted to the disc to allow for easy replacement.

7. The seal ring shall be positioned on the disc with the assistance of a locating pin and a die formed gasket shall be provided between the seal ring and the disc to prevent any possible leakage around the seal ring.

G. Stem:

1. Shall be a one-piece design. Two piece stems are not acceptable.

2. The stem material shall be stainless steel.

3. The stem shall be connected to the disc by means of an internal splined connection. Pins keys and other connection designs are not acceptable.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine piping system for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.

1. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

2. Modify piping as necessary for installation of new valves. Contractor is to verify piping connection dimensions prior to ordering valves.

B. Examine valve interior for cleanliness, freedom from foreign matter, and corrosion. Remove special packing materials, such as blocks, used to prevent disc movement during shipping and handling.

C. Operate valves in positions from fully open to fully close. Examine guides and seats made accessible by such operations.

D. Examine mating flange faces for conditions that might cause leakage. Check bolting for proper size, length, and material. Verify that gasket is of proper size, that its material composition is suitable for service, and that it is free from defects and damage.

E. Do not attempt to repair defective valves; replace with new valves.

3.02 VALVE APPLICATIONS

A. Refer to piping Sections for specific valve applications. If valve applications are not indicated, use the following:

1. Shutoff Service: butterfly valves.

B. Chilled Water Systems: Use the following valve types:

1. 14” Butterfly Valves: as specified above for valves noted as follows on plans (CHS Valves

3,4,5,6,7,8 and CHR Valves 3,4,5,6,7 and 8)

C. Condenser Water Systems: Use the following valve types:

1. 16” Butterfly Valves: as specified above for valves noted as follows on plans (CWS Valves

3,4,5,6,7,8 and CWR Valves 3,4,5,6,7 and 8)

3.03 VALVE INSTALLATION

A. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties. Contractor shall verify valve locations, dimensions, connection styles and dimensions with existing conditions prior to ordering valves. Contractor shall modify piping as required for installation of valves.

B. In general, install valves as per manufacturer’s instructions.

C. Install valves with unions or flanges at each piece of equipment arranged to allow service, maintenance, and equipment removal without system shutdown.

D. Locate valves for easy access and provide separate support where necessary.

E. Install valves in horizontal piping with stem at or above center of pipe wherever possible.

F. Install valves in position to allow full stem movement.

G. Install chain wheel operators on valves NPS 4 (DN 100) and larger and more than 96 inches (2400 mm) above floor. Extend chains to 60 inches (1520 mm) above finished floor elevation.

3.04 ADJUSTING

A. Adjust or replace valve packing after piping systems have been tested and put into service but before final adjusting and balancing. Replace valves if persistent leaking occurs.

3.05 REINSULATION OF PIPING AND NEW VALVE BODIES

A. Reinsulate all chilled water piping where insulation was removed for installation of valves with insulation that is of the same construction of the existing insulation serving chilled water system.

Insulate valve bodies complete and seal to provide complete vapor barrier around working chilled water system.

3.06 CLEANING DURING CONSTRUCTION
