PART 3 - EXECUTION

A. Water Piping All distribution mains shall be provided with at least 24” of earth cover, measured above the top of the pipe, unless otherwise approved by the COR. Where ledge is encountered, contractor shall sleeve pipe with schedule 40 PVC or HDPE pipe.

When crossing under a road or driveway, the carrier pipe shall be sleeved with sufficient diameter steel pipe. Bushings shall be installed at ends of steel pipe to protect HDPE pipe.

15060 – 3

B. Procedures for Pipe Joints

1. HDPE pipe joints shall be made in accordance with the pipe manufacturer’s instructions, a copy of which shall be furnished to the engineer prior to this work.

Contractor shall butt weld pipe sections with a contractor furnished thermal fusion machine, wherever practical. Contractor is required to furnish a generator to the site to operate the thermal fusion machine.

2. PVC pipe joints shall be solvent cement joints. Cut ends and ream to remove burrs. Clean and prime outside of pipe and inside fitting with recommended primer. Apply thin coat of solvent cement to inside of fitting and heavier coat to outside of pipe. Assemble quickly, pushing pipe fully into fitting. Wipe off excess cement.

3. Connections for ferrous pipe shall be threaded or flanged.

C. Excavation and Backfill

1. See Division 2.

2. Bottom of trenches shall be graded to provide the required slope.

D. Pipe Laying in Trench (Water Pipe).

1. Minimum depth of cover in trench is 36”.

2. Before the pipe is laid in the trench, the earth forming the bed shall be freed of stones, roots, etc. Pipe shall then be evenly bedded in the earth to leave a uniform support for the entire length of the pipe, except the couplings under which a recess shall be excavated to a sufficient depth to relieve it of any load and to allow ample space for making the joint.

In case the bed trimmed on the bottom of the trench is too low, earth shall be placed in the bottom of the trench and tamped, and a new bed shall be trimmed for the pipe. Pipe shall not be raised by ramming earth beneath it.

3. No pipe shall be laid in water without prior approval from the COR or his designated representative.

4. Prior to making pipe joints, all surfaces to be joined shall be clean and dry.

Lubricants, primers, adhesives, etc., shall be used as recommended by the pipe and/or joint manufacturer's specifications. The joints shall be made water-tight.

5. When the pipe has been bedded and the joint made, the recess under the couplings shall be refilled with earth and tamped on each side of the pipe to hold it securely in place. Care shall be taken to not disturb the position of the pipe during this process.

15060 – 4

6. Backfill shall not be placed over any pipe that is in a heated condition. Before backfilling, the pipe temperature shall be brought to the approximate temperature of the ground.

7. Backfill material shall be as designated on the drawings.

8. Trenches shall be kept water free and dry during bedding, laying and backfilling.

9. At the end of each work day and when left unattended, all open ends of the pipes will be covered to prevent entrance of trash or wildlife.

10. Connections will be made to the existing and/or constructed facilities according to standard plumbing practices. Any connections made between different pipe materials shall be made using connectors or adaptors designed for the purpose of connecting the two types of pipe.

F. Pipe Pressure Tests

1. All piping shall be pressure tested before concealment of joints.

2. All pressure testing must be witnessed by the COR or designee.

3. Water distribution piping shall be tested in accordance with the pipe manufacturer’s recommended testing procedure. Unless expressed otherwise by the pipe manufacturer, the contractor shall adhere to the following testing procedures taken from PPI Technical Report TR-31 by the Plastic Pipe Institute.

A. Pressure Testing Outside the Trench:

After the pipe has been joined, fill it with water; carefully bleed off any trapped air.

Subject the pipe to a hydrostatic test pressure that is 1.5 times the system design pressure for a maximum of 3 hours. During this time, add water periodically to maintain the test pressure; this compensates for the initial stretching of the pipe. The line pressure tightness is determined by visual observation; therefore, it is not necessary to measure the make-up water. Examine every fused joint, any leakage must be repaired and then retested.

NOTE: It shall be the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are observed during hydrostatic testing above ground.

B. Testing In the Trench:

Fill the pipeline with water after it has been laid; bleed off any trapped air. Subject the lowest element in the system to a test pressure that is 1.5 times the design pressure, and check for any leakage. When, in the opinion of the COR, local conditions require that the trenches be backfilled immediately after the pipe has been laid, apply the pressure test after backfilling has been completed but not sooner than a time which will allow sufficient curing of any concrete that may have been used. All joints, however, must remain open until a successful test has been approved by the

15060 – 5

COR. Typical minimum concrete curing times are 36 hours for early strengths and 7 days for normal strengths. The test procedures consist of two steps; the initial expansion and the test phase. When test pressure is applied to a water filled pipe, the pipe expands. During the initial expansion of the pipe under test, sufficient make-up water must be added to the system at hourly intervals for 3 hours to maintain the test pressure. After about 4 hours, initial expansion should be complete and the actual test can start. When the test is to begin, the pipe is full of water and is subjected to a constant test pressure of 1.5 times the system design pressure. The test phase should not exceed 3 hours, after which time any water deficiency must be replaced and measured. Add and measure the amount of make-up water required to return to the test pressure and compare this to the maximum allowance in the table below.

ALLOWANCE FOR EXPANSION UNDER PRESSURE TEST

NOMINAL GALLONS PER 100 LF OF PIPE

PIPE SIZE 1 HOUR 2 HOURS 3 HOURS

2” 0.08 0.12 0.15 3” 0.10 0.15 0.25 4” 0.13 0.25 0.40 5” 0.21 0.41 0.63 6” 0.30 0.60 0.90

An alternate leakage test consists of maintaining the test pressure (described above) over a period of 4 hours and then dropping the pressure by 10 psi. If the pressure then remains within 5% of the target value for 1 hour, this indicates there is no leakage in the system.

B. NOTE:

Under no circumstances shall the total time under test exceed 8 hours at 1.5 times the system pressure rating. If the test is not complete within this time limit (due to leakage, equipment failure, etc.), the test section shall be permitted to “relax” for 8 hours prior to the next test sequence. Air testing is not recommended. Additional safety precautions may be required.

4. Disinfection

A. All potable water piping shall be disinfected with a 100 ppm chlorine solution after being thoroughly flushed with water to remove sediment, etc. All outlets shall be opened and left open until a strong odor of chlorine is noticeable, after which all outlets shall be closed.

B. After standing for 24 hours, the chlorine residual shall be greater than 25 ppm. If not, the test lines shall be repeated. Upon completing the test, the lines shall be flushed clean until less than 1 ppm residual is present.
