CONSTRUCTION STAKING
GENERAL
Description
This section specifies performance of construction staking for all structures and site work for the project in accordance with the drawings and specifications. The work includes furnishing all labor, equipment, materials, instruments, transportation, and other incidentals necessary to complete the construction staking in accordance with these specifications and acceptable engineering practice.
PRODUCTS
Materials
Identification stakes shall be of sufficient length to provide a solid set in the ground and to provide space for marking above ground when applicable.
The top two inches of all stakes shall be painted and marked with plastic flagging.
Paper for survey notes shall be moisture resistant. Notes shall be contained in books with covers that will protect the contents and retain the pages in numerical sequence during field use.
EXECUTION
Survey Requirements
All notes shall become the property of the Forest Service upon completion of the project.
Errors shall be deleted by lining out.
Date, crew names and positions, instrumentation, and weather shall be recorded in the notes at the beginning of each day's work.
Control points have been established on the ground for this project. The Contractor shall establish all additional vertical and horizontal control from these points.
Control shall be established using nominal 1-inch by 1-inch hubs or spikes, when hubs cannot be set, spikes shall be of sufficient length to provide a solid set. Identification stakes shall be installed adjacent to all control locations.
The Contractor shall set a sufficient number of control locations for the platform to provide precision requirements set forth in Specification 02210 - Earthwork.
Vertical and horizontal control for the viewing platform, and sign structures shall be +/-0.10 feet. Survey staking by the contractor shall provide enough control within specification tolerances to construct an acceptable and completed project.
Construction work shall not begin until the stakes, marks, and controls established by the Contractor have been approved in writing by the COR. Approval of the construction staking work shall not relieve the Contractor of the responsibility for maintaining the survey work until construction has been completed and for correcting errors, whether the errors are discovered during performance of the survey or in subsequent phases of the project.
Contractor shall remove all stakes upon completion of the project.

SECTION 02104
CLEARING AND GRUBBING
GENERAL
Description

Do not remove trees or other vegetative material outside the clearing limits unless shown on Drawings or approved by the COR.
Grubbing
Grub stumps, shrubs, brush, and roots as shown on the drawings. Remove all roots exposed in the area of excavation.
Debris Disposal
Unless otherwise specified, remove all debris and dispose at designated disposal area.

EARTHWORK
GENERAL
Description
This section specifies earthwork within the clearing limits.
Construction Tolerances
The maximum allowable deviation from construction stakes and drawings is as follows for the excavation & backfill for viewing platform, sign structures and fences:
Subgrade Width + 0.2 Foot Subgrade Elevation - 0.1 Foot Centerline Alignment +/- 0.1 Foot Slopes, Excavation and Embankment +/- 1.0 Percent
Excavation and Fill Material
Rocks exceeding 6 inches in any dimension shall not be incorporated into any fill under footings or within 1 foot of areas designated for asphalt, 8 x 8 treated timber borders, or Portland cement concrete surfacing. Rocks exceeding 6 inches in any dimension may be used as riprap. All sticks, root wads, clods, or other deleterious material shall be stockpiled as shown on the drawing.
Provide COR written notice at least 7 days in advance prior to starting excavation.
Footings and Foundations
Subgrade: After excavating to the required elevations, subgrade shall be moistened or dried to a uniform moisture content suitable for compaction. Compaction equipment conforming to the requirements below shall be operated over the full width of the subgrade a minimum of three (3) passes or until visual displacement ceases.
Foundations: Consider the elevations of the bottoms of footings and foundations shown on the drawings to be approximate elevations. The COR may order, in writing, changes in the elevations when necessary to secure a satisfactory foundation. Excavate to the depth shown on the drawing to provide a firm foundation of uniform density throughout its length and width. Do not disturb native material below the foundation depth. For footing to be placed on solid rock or interlocking boulders, clean the foundation surface of loose or disintegrated material. For footing to be placed on other than rock, the foundation shall be moistened or dried to a uniform moisture content and compacted immediately before concrete is placed.
Fill material shall be placed in 6-inch maximum lifts. Material shall be moistened or dried to a uniform moisture content suitable for compaction. Compaction equipment conforming to the requirements below shall be operated over the full width of each lift a minimum of three (3) passes or until visual displacement ceases. Do not place backfill against concrete that is less than 3 days old, or until 90 percent of the design strength is achieved.
Finished work site shall be graded to smoothly blend into existing contours.
Grade to uniform levels or slopes between points where grades or contours are given, round surfaces at abrupt changes in levels. Finished grades shall allow for drainage, not ponding of surface water.
Protection of Existing Objects
Protect from damage all objects, including brush and trees, not designated for removal.
Objects shown on the Drawings, but damaged by the Contractor, shall be repaired or replaced at the Contractor's expense.
Compaction Equipment
Compaction equipment shall be capable of obtaining compaction requirements without detrimentally affecting the compacted material. The compacting units may be of any type, provided they are capable of compacting each lift of material as specified, unless otherwise approved by COR:
(a) Mechanical Tampers may be used in areas where it is impractical to operate larger compaction equipment.

The moisture content of the aggregate shall be uniform throughout. The aggregate shall be spread in a uniform layer, with no segregation of size, and to a loose depth that shall have the required thickness when compacted. Aggregate base or surface course that exceeds 6 inches, shall be placed in two or more layers of approximate equal thickness. Hauling equipment shall be dispersed over the surface of the previously constructed layer to minimize rutting or uneven compaction.
3.3 Compaction - Each layer of aggregate shall be compacted with three (3) passes or visual displacement. The surface of each layer shall be bladed during compaction operations to remove irregularities and produce a smooth, even surface. Compaction equipment shall be capable of obtaining compaction requirements without detrimentally affecting the compacted material.
3.4 Thickness Requirement - The thickness of the compacted aggregate shall not vary more than 1/2-inch from the thickness shown on the drawings. The compacted thickness shall not be consistently below the specified thickness.
