Deep Ripping of Roadbed.
Deep Ripping shall consist of decompacting the full roadbed to a depth of 18” - 24”. After decompaction, the road surface shall be left in a roughened condition with no long furrows, which may concentrate or channelize water. Large and small woody debris shall be scattered on the newly ripped surface from available sources along the section of roadway being decompacted. Road segments requiring deep ripping are incidental to Full and Partial Recontour and Stream Channel Restoration.
Item 210(15) Scarifying Scarifying shall consist of decompacting the full roadbed to a depth of 6” - 12”. After decompaction, the road surface shall be left in a roughened condition with no long furrows, which may concentrate or channelize water. Large and small woody debris shall be scattered on the newly scarified surface from available sources along the section of roadway being decompacted. Road segments only requiring scarifying are SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.
Item 210(11) Relief Swales.
At the site remove all road fill and bedding material and restore to natural ground slope. Soil organic layers and stumps can be used as indicators to determine slope and width of the swale which shall be restored. Blend side slopes of the swale upslope and downslope of the road to determine the re-contour shape. Use features that have not been altered by road construction to connect the swale by excavating to a uniform grade that connects the undisturbed swale upslope and downslope of the road. The restored swale should have a natual appearance that conforms to the surrounding landscape. Relief Swales shall be constructed as SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.
Waterbars.
Construct AS SHOWN IN THE DRAWINGS for Stream Channel Restoration – After, and as staked/marked on the ground by the Contracting Officer. Waterbars will be incidental to the construction of Full and Partial recontouring and Stream Channel Restoration sites. No more than10 waterbars will be required.
Item 210(12) Roadway Brushing Brushing shall be required as part of this contract to access the full extent of the project area. It is up to the contractor to decide which method to employ to accomplish brushing of the travelway. Heavy brush will be encountered, and can be masticated. The 1016 road section is almost entirely heavily brushed. Light to moderately brushed sections of road may be cleared with an excavator by grubbing brush from the travelway and storing it so that it can be used to slash the decommissioned road. The 1054B road section is light to moderately brushed. Both road sections require access for safety reasons and for service vehicles. Equipment access to the 1054B will require constructing a temporary travelway through 300 feet of fully recontoured road, the existing road barricade will need to be removed. Four large boulders will need to be set aside. Upon completion of the work on the 1054B the road will be restored to its recontoured state and the boulders replaced. This will be paid indirectly under Roadway Brushing.
Selective Clearing.
Where roads are overgrown with brush and small regeneration, move and operate equipment over brush without grubbing, scarifying or otherwise destroying the established root system in the roadway except at designated work sites. Cut and utilize as slope stabilization debris, brush within the roadway prism that is designated on the ground or as shown on the drawings.
