AG-0116-S-09-0020 Eight Fathom Cabin Page 2 Amendment No. 3

Section 133400 – 2.03.A REVISION:

Add the following to the end of the specification section:

Provide and install heavy-duty snow stops to protect stove pipe and related mounting hardware. Stops to be as recommended by roofing manufacturer and installed in accordance with their installation instructions.

Section H.4 USE OF PREMISES Revision:

Add the following to the end of the specification:

f) The Forest Service will allow contractor use of the 8-Fathom mobile home camp located about 500’ north of the proposed cabin site for housing while work is proceeding on the project. Prior to using the facility, review and sign standard housing agreement regarding use of premises. The mobile home is provided on an as-is basis. Repair any damage to the facility that occurs from use by the contractor. Contractor to supply own propane, firewood and diesel fuel for electrical generator.

Question 1) Is there any snow stop requirement behind the skylights and stove pipe?

Answer: Yes, Refer to the Section 133400 – 2.03.A Revision listed above.

Question 2) Are there plans to replace the existing boardwalk with new materials?

Answer: No. There will be very limited repair of existing boardwalks using lumber materials.

Question 3) What size D-logs are prefered for the cabin?

Answer: The contract does not specify a particular milling pattern for wall timbers, such as D-logs. The size will be as proposed by the contractor as long as the structural requirements are met and stamped by the architect or engineer.

Question 4) Standard practice around Southeast Alaska requires concrete foundations to be below 32” grade for frost protection using a “big foot” and “sonah-tube”. The drawings show a concrete block on top of the sediment without a size minimum nor a depth requirement. What further details can you give us on the foundation?

Answer: Sheet #9, Cabin Foundation Details, shows a design concept for the foundation. It is not intended that this is the only acceptable foundation design. The contractor is responsible for submitting a foundation design for approval that meets the Structural Design Values shown in Section 011100 – 2.02.b, other requirements shown in the contract, and is stamped by a registered Architect or Engineer.

Question 5) Is there any requirement on the outhouse hole as far as erosion protection once the

AG-0116-S-09-0020 Eight Fathom Cabin Page 3 Amendment No. 3 hole is dug and the outhouse installed? If so, what are the retaining wall requirements?

Answer: The outhouse hole is intended to be dug in native earth as close to the dimensions shown as the ground stability will allow. There are no requirements for retaining walls.

Question 6) I’ve heard of an old FS cabin near the site. Is this cabin close, and if so, is it available for use during construction?

Answer: Yes, Refer to the Section H.4 Use of Premises revision listed above.

Question 7) Is the Forest Service providing funds for a “locate” to define the perimeter of the cabin and trail system?

Answer: See Sheet #2 for trail and outhouse staking. See Sheet #3 for cabin staking.

Other major site features such as the Stream Rehabilitation work shall be staked by the contractor for approval by the Government prior to beginning construction activities on those items.

Question 8) The elevation views on Sheet #6 show the stove pipe leaving the roof along the lower eave. Eight fathom gets a lot of snow so should a stove pipe exiting close to the ridge be the best solution to prevent snow load damage?

Answer: The stove pipe location will be as in the contract. The Forest Service will provide an additional set of pipe brackets for installation by the contractor to reinforce the installation.
