About this file

This Addendum No. 2, issued February 28, 2020, modifies the original plans and specifications for the MDNR Iron Belle Trail Pedestrian Bridge project at Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park in Michigan, prepared by U.P. Engineers & Architects, Inc. The addendum addresses four bidder questions regarding project specifications and materials. Key clarifications include: cable clamps must be stainless steel but do not require custom drop forging, with substitutions permitted if they match dimension requirements and working strength; the 3/8" cable supporting the chain link fence top should be substituted with 5/16" diameter 1x7 or 1x19 stainless steel cable (Type 302, minimum breaking strength 12,500 pounds), and flexible net clamps should be replaced with 8mm stainless steel clamps; 0.075 copper naphthenate treatment is acceptable as an alternative to specified treatments; and dissimilar metal contact restrictions are clarified to note that both the cable and bearing strap are stainless steel, eliminating the concern about incompatible materials. Bidders are required to acknowledge receipt of Addendum No. 2 on the bid form.

No pricing information, set-asides, funding sources, or contract term details are provided in this addendum document. The document serves solely as a clarification tool for interpreting specifications and identifying acceptable material substitutions to facilitate the competitive bidding process.

Bidder Questions and Answers

1. Question: Does the cable clamp/hanger detail B1 on sheet S201 need to be custom drop forged stainless steel?

Answer: The cable clamp needs to be stainless steel. It does not need to be drop forged or custom. Stainless steel clamps of a similar dimension with a working strength that exceeds the cable working strength and sufficient clamp force may be substituted.

2. Question: Where can we find a supplier for the hardware in detail C1 on sheet S201?

Answer: Substitute the 3/8” cable supporting the top of the chain link fence with a 5/16” diameter 1x7 or 1x19 stainless steel cable (type 302, min breaking strength of 12,500 pounds) and the 3/8” flexible net clamps with an 8 mm flexible net clamp. Check the following suppliers:

Wire rope: Hanes Supply, Inc.

SS flexible net clamps: Southern Rigging Supplies SS shackle: Suncor Stainless (5/16” round pin S00115-RP08-US)

SS Rigid Couplings: Amazon.com, Climax Part RC-037-S-KW T303 Stainless Steel Rigid Coupling

3. Question: Is 0.075 copper naphthenate treatment acceptable instead of what is in the specifications?

Answer: Yes, 0.075 pcf copper naphthenate is acceptable.

4. Question: The cable is stainless steel and the cable bearing strap is galvanized steel. There is a note in the plans that dissimilar metals are not allowed to be in contact. Please clarify.
