About this file

This is an Acceptance Test Requirements document for a Bluefors dilution refrigerator system (G6-168039) to be delivered to Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM).

The acceptance test requirements specify that the contractor must reassemble all system components disassembled for transportation, connect the instrument to facility utilities, and power up the system for operational verification. The system must feature a fully welded main heat exchanger to ensure indefinite trouble-free operation without the leak-prone soft solder joints. The contractor must deliver a cryogenic system capable of providing high cooling power exceeding 14 W at 20 mK and greater than 450 W at 100 mK, with 18 liters of helium-3, measured from the sample mounting flange located far away from the mixing chamber. This equipment is being procured under solicitation 6-S176-Q-00414-00 by the Department of Energy Office of Science through Argonne National Laboratory, with quotation responses due by 5:00 PM CDT on August 26, 2026. Offerors must submit technical compliance documentation, country of origin certification, lead time information, and completed ANL-70 and ANL-70B forms. Award will be made to the lowest-price, technically acceptable proposal.

Acceptance Test Requirements:G6-168039

1. The contractor must reassemble all components of the system that are disassembled for transportation to CNM. Then the Instrument must be connected to the facility utilities and powered up for operation.

2. Fully welded main heat exchanger provides indefinite trouble-free operation compared to the use of soft solder joints which are prone to developing leaks.

3. High cooling power of >14 µW @ 20 mK and >450 µW @ 100 mK with 18L of He3 measured from the sample mounting flange far away from the mixing chamber.

4. The base temperature <10 mK with all factory installed wiring. All pumps and the mixture compressor are oil-free and the compressor for the mixture circulation is not of membrane type.

5. The mixture circulation pump is maintenance-free with a 6-year average service life with advanced diagnostics.

6. 4K heater with 40 W power.

7. Large experimental space of 294 mm with side dilution unit maximizing the available useful experimental space.

8. Variety of access ports between RT and MXC flange primary ones being: 2× KF63 and 5× KF40 line of sights ports.

9. Free space optical access through both top ports and side windows.

10. THz (0.04 - 2 THz) access is available through both top ports and side windows.

11. 6-1-1 T magnet for applying magnetic field at arbitrary direction, install and test the magnet up to 6-1-1 T after cooldown.

12. DC, microwave (up to 40 GHz) wiring and helium gas lines.

13. Vibration isolation frame and active damping frame (1.0 Hz-200 Hz) to suppress the system vibration.
