3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 General. The Contractor shall remove each propeller from its associated shaft. Thoroughly clean the propeller, hub, and shaft interface free of all marine growth, dirt, and all other foreign substances.

CAUTION!

Do not use a foreign object as an anti-torque device against the propeller blade(s) while removing the propellers. The application of force to the propeller blade will result in knocking the propeller blade out of 'rake' and affecting the overall 'track' of the propeller blades.

The use of a non-marring shaft locking device is recommended.

3.1.1 Checkpoint. The Contractor shall submit a CIR for the inspections listed in the following paragraph(s):

21 (Rev-0)

• 3.2 Inspections.

3.1.2 Tech Rep.

Not applicable.

3.1.3 Protective measures - general. The Contractor shall furnish and install all protective coverings to seal off and protect all non-affected vessel's components, equipment, and spaces in the vicinity of the work area against contamination during the performance of work. Upon completion of work, the Contractor shall remove all installed protective measures, inspect for the presence of contamination, and return all contaminated equipment, components, and spaces to original condition of cleanliness.

3.1.4 Interferences. The Contractor shall remove all interferences in way of specified work, as necessary, without regard to whether interferences are listed in this statement of work; restore all removed interferences upon completion of the specified work. The Contractor may exercise the discretion to work around certain interferences, when possible, so long as the specified work is successfully accomplished.

3.2 Inspections. The Contractor shall perform the following inspections:

3.2.1 Visual. Visually inspect the following, for evidence of damage and defects:

• Each shaft interface, threads, propeller, propeller hub bore, and adjacent areas.

• The entire trailing edge of the propeller blades and the surface around the blade roots in the area of the anti-cavitation holes.

• The hub of the propellers, propeller nut, and the propeller fairing cones (if applicable).

3.2.2 Measurement. Measure and record the following for each propeller:

• Propeller diameter.

• Blade thickness.

• Blade pitch.

• Rake.

• Track.

• Anti-cavitation holes.

• Anti-singing edges.

3.3 Report. The Contractor shall submit a CIR for the completed inspections.

3.4 Polishing. After resolution of any noted defects, the Contractor shall polish all surfaces of the propellers to a uniform finish, conforming to the Class S standard in ISO 484/2.

3.4.1 To avoid singing, it is important the trailing edge of the propeller blades be sharp. Sharpen the trailing edge of the propeller blade. Although the angle isn’t critical, it must be consistent, the same on all blades and should be to sharp edge similar to the Figure 320-1. A curled edge is not allowed. Viewing the blades from the aft side facing forward:

22 (Rev-0)

3.4.1.1 On the right hand blade, start sharpening the blade at the top at about the 11:00 o’clock position and continue down to approximately the 1/3 radius

3.4.1.2On the left hand blade, start sharpening the blade at the top at approximately the 1:00 o’clock position and continue down to approximately the 1/3 radius

5. NOTES

5.1 Propeller Data: Cast Manganese Bronze, 4 blades per propeller, 8 ft. Diameter, and surface area of 64 ft. squared each.

5.2 The T-AGOS class ships have a demonstrated problem with singing propellers which requires special care during cleaning and polishing. The propellers feature a chisel cut anti-singing edge and a knuckle on the suction face of the blades. The radius of this knuckle is 0.015 inches and can be easily polished off causing the propellers to sing. The knuckle and chisel area should be cleaned by hand with a medium, (red) 3M hand pad fixed to a flat piece of wood and used like a flat file to keep the chisel flat and the knuckle sharp. Provide the ABS Surveyor with prior notice and the opportunity to inspect any or all portions of ongoing work ordered by this item.
