About this file

This technical specification document details requirements for two 50-ohm attenuators to be used in the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The attenuators are designed as matched loads for a strip-line kicker operating at +/- 30kV, which will be used for hadron beam injection into the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Key technical specifications include a pulsed mode of operation with a 1 Hz repetition rate, maximum peak power of 20 MW, input/output impedance of 50 ohms (+/- 1%), and a bandwidth from DC to 1 GHz. The devices must function within an ambient temperature range of 18-35°C, 90% relative humidity, and at elevations between 0-45 meters.

The specification mandates compliance with specific electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, including IEC 61000-6-2 for immunity and IEC 61000-6-4 for emissions. The document emphasizes a hierarchical approach to hazard identification and mitigation, prioritizing hazard elimination, substitution with less hazardous alternatives, engineering controls, and administrative controls. The attenuators require air cooling, use transformer oil as an insulation medium, and must have output ports with a voltage accuracy of +/- 1%. A final test report documenting pre-shipment tests is required to verify conformance with all specified requirements.

Technical Specification for the HSR Injection Strip-line Kicker Matched Loads (Attenuators)

1 SCOPE

This specification defines the technical requirements for two 50 ohms attenuators to be used at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) managed by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA).

1.1 Background

The EIC Project will design, build, and install the accelerator hardware for a new electron storage ring, an electron injector, and modifications to the hadron ring required to produce an electron-ion collider and infrastructure. It will include one interaction region, with an allowance for a second, and one detector. The facility is designed to meet requirements to ensure high reliability and availability for the user program.

These two attenuators will be used as matched loads for a strip-line kicker operating at +/- 30kV which is required for the injection of the hadron beam into the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). The output signal from the attenuators will be used to measure the voltage on the strip-line electrodes.

2 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The following specifications, standards and drawings form a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. Unless otherwise specified, the applicable revision level of these documents shall be that in effect on the date of the solicitation or contract. Exceptions must be approved in writing by BSA.

In the event of a conflict between the applicable documents and this specification, the Contractor shall immediately notify the BSA Contractual Representative who shall in each instance determine which document takes precedence and advise the Contractor accordingly. Failure to notify BSA of a document conflict shall not relieve the Contractor’s responsibility to ensure full compliance to all requirements.
