About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details the procurement of two 50-ohm attenuators for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The attenuators will serve as matched loads for a strip-line kicker operating at +/- 30kV, with specific requirements including a 7-nanosecond rise and fall time and a 40-nanosecond flattop. The contractor must design, manufacture, and test the attenuators, ensuring they can accurately measure pulse characteristics in an ionizing radiation environment.

Key deliverables include a program plan, technical reports, manufacturing/inspection plans, design review reports, and the final equipment, all to be completed within 16 weeks of contract award. The project requires compliance with ISO-9001 quality management standards and extensive documentation, with BSA (Brookhaven Science Associates) maintaining oversight through design reviews, testing witness, and configuration management. The SOW emphasizes value engineering, encouraging the contractor to propose improvements in performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness while meeting stringent technical specifications.

Statement of Work for the HSR Strip-line Kicker Matched Loads (Attenuators)

1 SCOPE

This Statement of Work (SOW) will be the basis for the procurement of two 50-ohm attenuators to be used at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) managed by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA). This document outlines the Contractor’s responsibilities and obligations necessary for completing the requirements as set forth herein.

Background

The EIC Project will design, build, and install the accelerator hardware for a new electron storage ring, an electron injector, and modifications to the hadron ring required to produce an electron-ion collider and infrastructure. It will include one interaction region, with an allowance for a second, and one detector. The facility is designed to meet requirements to ensure high reliability and availability for the user program.

These two 50-ohm attenuators will act as the matched load for the strip-line kicker operating at +/- 30kV with 7-nanosecond rise time and fall time and a flattop of 40 nanoseconds and their outputs will be used to determine the kicker currents. The kicker will be used to inject a hadron beam into the EIC’s Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). There are stringent requirements for the rise and fall time of the pulse as well as the length and stability of its flattop and the attenuators must be designed to measure these pulses accurately. The technical requirements for the attenuators are found in the associated specification EIC-PSG-SPC-003, “Technical Specification for the HSR Strip-line Kicker Matched Loads (Attenuators)’.
